The Sylhet District authorities have suspended the movement of trains to and from Sylhet Railway Station as its platform has gone underwater amid the worsening flood situation in the District.

For now trains will run from Maizgaon Railway Station in Fenchuganj, which is 20km from Sylhet.

Shahidul Huq, General Secretary of Sylhet Railway Sramik League, said the platform was under six inches of water.

The intercity Parabat Express coming from Dhaka would stop at Maizgaon Railway Station in the afternoon, instead of Sylhet Railway Station, he added.

Earlier in the day, different trains, including the intercity Jayantika Express, left Sylhet Railway Station as usual, Shahidul said.

Flight operations at Sylhet's Osmani International Airport have been suspended since Friday afternoon will remain so till Monday due the runway going underwater.

According to Meteorologist Saeed Amhed Chowdhury, Sylhet saw 157mm of rainfall from 6am to noon on Saturday.

Heavy rainfall was likely to continue in the District till Monday, he said.

The Bangladesh Water Development Board’s Sylhet office said the Surma River was flowing above the danger level at Kanaighat and Sylhet points at 6am on Saturday.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre on Saturday warned that floods could hit 14 Districts in the northern region of Bangladesh in the next two days.

According to the FFWC, flood waters are entering the Brahmaputra basin through Kurigram and advancing further.

As a result, waters could enter Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogra, Tangail, Sirajganj, Manikganj and Pabna in the next few days.

In the Teesta basin, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Rangpur might also get flooded.

Meanwhile, due to water coming down hilltops, water level in the Teesta River in Sylhet has risen which is affecting the Jamuna River. As a result, its water level in Sirajganj has risen beyond the danger level. Kazipur point in the District is at 1cm above danger level.

On the other hand, heavy rains have started upstream of the Padma River which may increase further. As a result, floods may start in the lower areas of Shariatpur, Madaripur, Chandpur and Faridpur.

According to the FFWC, heavy rains are likely to intensify over the next two days in greater parts of Meghalaya, Assam and West Bengal.

Due to the rains, water from upstream could worsen the flood situation in the country. 📸 Photo: Focus Bangla

The Hydrogen Peroxide stored at the BM Container Depot Limited in Sitakunda turned into a cloud of toxic fumes when it caught fire on 4 June, Medical Experts and Chemists have said.

Concentrated Hydrogen Peroxide can cause irreversible damage to the human body when ingested or inhaled, in addition to being a combustible substance, they added.

Depending on the level of inhalation, the chemical can lead to chronic lung diseases and even kidney failure. A pulmonary oedema may occur in very severe cases, which can potentially be fatal.

It can cause blindness if it comes into contact with the eyes, and irritate the nose and throat.

Fumes and smoke from the fire and explosion may have extended across a 2.5 Km radius, with an indirect impact up to 10 Km away, according to Dr Nandan Mukherjee, an academic from Dundee University. His estimates are based on satellite images from US-based organization Zoom Earth.

A total 63 victims of the massive fire and explosion at BM Container Depot at Sitakunda in Chittagong suffered eye injuries during the incident, Doctors have said.

Covered van driver Nurul Absar, one of the victims of the fire, has been suffering from hearing problems and chest pains since the incident. An on-duty Doctor at the CMCH said many other victims had also complained of similar problems.

At least six of the victims have serious vision issues, ophthalmologist Prof Md Nurul Haque told media at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

He said that the six patients need to be sent to Dhaka for better treatment. "One of them may need to be sent abroad."

The Doctor added that several patients had burnt tracheas, and the number of patients with chest pains and breathing problems was increasing.

Physicians of CMCH and Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, where most victims are admitted, said it generally takes six to seven days to determine whether chemical injuries can cause long-term complications.

Dr Mohammed Atiqur Rahman, Professor at the Department of Respiratory Medicine of BSMMU, said, "Concentrated hydrogen peroxide can cause many problems. If it gets on the skin or the eyes, it can lead to blindness, bronchitis, and hearing problems that progressively gradually get worse."

Inhalation of the chemical can lead to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) 4, which needs to be managed for life.

He said, "Those whose trachea burns will suffer as long as they live. Lung fibres will gradually get more damaged."

Dr Mohammad Ismail Hossain, Professor of Chemistry at Chittagong University, said there may be major long-term effects due to the fire spreading concentrated Hydrogen Peroxide over the area.

"Since the fire lasted for 2-3 days, toxic smoke is thought to have spread far and wide. This can have serious complications."

The Hydrogen Peroxide will eventually rain back down, contaminating the environment and posing a long-term danger to plants and animals as well as people. The level of impact will depend on the amount of chemical that was burned into the atmosphere.
