Tigers take punch, grind Loggers down:
Onalaska made Napavine bleed.
Napavine made Onalaska pay.
The Loggers threw the best punch that the Tigers have seen in a regular-season game in quite some time, but all it did was delay things, as a slow avalanche of big plays buried them in a 58-14 Napavine win in hostile territory.
“It’s always good beating Ony,” Napavine quarterback Ashton Demarest said. “It’s Ony. I love beating them.”
After falling behind 8-0 early and hitting rough patches on offense, the Tigers (2-0) ground their way to a lead by the end of the first quarter, on a pair of Demarest runs. By halftime, it was 30-14, capped off by a Demarest touchdown pass to Colin Shields in the final 10 seconds of the second quarter.
Still, the Logger faithful had plenty of buzz, down just two possessions at the break. So after only managing 37 rushing yards in the first half, the Tigers went to work crafting a haymaker.
“We had to stay the course and regroup,” Napavine coach Josh Fay said. “It took longer than I’d hoped it would, but I thought we responded at halftime, and were pretty focused coming out.”

Winlock elementary welcomes retired reserve sergeant as school resource officer:
Retired Toledo reserve officer Randy Pennington was getting ready to return his patrol car after his last shift with the police department in July 2022 when he got a call from Winlock Police Chief Stephen Valentine.
“He said, ‘instead of turning it in, you should just change colors,’” Pennington said, recalling how Valentine asked him to come work in Winlock.
“I said, ‘’Now, Steve, I’m not chasing no more bad guys.’ And he said, ‘Well that’s what’s really cool: is you don’t have to chase bad guys.’”
Valentine had wanted to assign Pennington to Winlock Elementary School as a school resource officer: a law enforcement officer who is responsible for safety and crime prevention within a school.
“I said, ‘No more chasing bad guys?’ ‘Not unless they’re at school.’ ‘Hey, that sounds like something I can do,’” Pennington said, recalling the conversation with Valentine.

“My life was spared,” he said. “If I’d been driving one second faster, the tree would’ve hit me in the head, and I’d be dead.”
He thinks about that often, and the sequence of events that followed that kept him alive.
“There must be something worth keeping me around for,” he continued. “If it’s just to be a husband, dad and cop, that’s good enough for me.”
But there is more, he believes.
“There may eventually be someone who sees me and grows up to be a cop when they didn’t think it was something they could do,” he said.
That means doing the job every day, just like any other cop.

New Toledo Learning Garden greenhouse opens with blessing from Cowlitz Indian Tribe:
Kids learning to garden at Toledo Elementary School can now be part of the full growing process, from seed to fruit, thanks to a new greenhouse built in the school’s garden.
The Toledo Learning Garden and the Cowlitz Indian Tribe hosted a ribbon-cutting and blessing for a new greenhouse on Saturday, Aug. 26, to celebrate the years of hard work that went into the greenhouse project and to spiritually prepare the space for new growth.
“What we’re going to do is just bless this wonderful, wonderful greenhouse and hopefully give it a fresh, energized start for its lifetime and what it’s going to do in the community,” said Cowlitz Indian Tribe Elder and Spiritual Leader Tanna Engdahl ahead of her spirit walk in the greenhouse with Cowlitz Indian Tribe Culture Board President John O’Brien on Saturday.
“We know that it will foster life, it will nurture growth and it will be part of all of you, especially the founders, who are going to launch it into the future for you to learn to grow along with it,” she said of the greenhouse.
The new greenhouse will allow Toledo students learning gardening through the school’s garden science classes to germinate seeds on-site instead of shipping them off after planting and picking them up when they are mature enough to transplant.
