‘Stand by our Syrian brothers’, says Jordan FM after meeting al-Sharaa

Jordan’s foreign minister has held talks with Syria’s de facto ruler Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus as regional leaders move to engage with the new administration following the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad two weeks ago.
“We stand by our Syrian brothers as they start the rebuilding process,” Ayman Safadi told Al Jazeera on Monday.
Mohammed al-Khulaifi, minister of state at Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also arrived in the Syrian capital, days after Doha opened its embassy in Damascus after 13 years.
Monday’s high-profile diplomatic visit came a day after Turkiye’sr foreign minister promised help with the political transition and rebuilding the war-torn country after meeting the new administration.

Diplomats meet in Aqaba, Jordan to decide Syria’s future

During a news conference following a meeting with eight Arab foreign ministers in Jordan, the host country’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi says they all “stand by the people of Syria… in their upcoming phase of rebuilding following decades of killing, destruction and displacement”.

“Our message is clear. We all stand by the side of the Syrian people and we will do all that is in our power to help them build a better future towards a stable, secure life which they have been lacking and wanting for decades,” he said.

An overnight curfew has been imposed in the capital, as the opposition begins to work on forming a transitional government.

Russian state news agencies have reported that former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is in Moscow and has received asylum.
Citing a source in the Kremlin, al-Assad and his family were granted asylum based on “humanitarian considerations”.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said earlier that al-Assad had left Syria.

After capturing Hama, Syrian opposition forces push towards Homs

Opposition forces have captured Hama, Syria's fourth-largest city.
Activists report they have taken control of Hama’s air base, police headquarters, and prison.
Syrian government troops state they have redeployed outside the city.
Opposition forces are gathering troops and equipment as they advance towards Homs, Syria’s third-largest city, located 40km (24 miles) south of Hama.
If Homs is captured, it could cut Damascus off from the coastal region, a stronghold of Assad’s Alawite sect and home to Russian naval and air bases.
Homs is a particularly strategic city for the regime, positioned at the crossroads between Syria’s capital, Damascus, and the coastal provinces of Tartus and Latakia, where many regime supporters and Russian military facilities are located.
