For many people, music is a staple part of our lives. Some only listen, while others, no matter how hectic our days are, look to making music. Today, we explore the journey of such a music maker, the Assistant Professor of the School of Architecture and Design (SoAD), Shams Mansoor Ghani . Along with all of that, he is also the songwriter, producer, and keyboardist at Warfaze and Onibarjo .
After being in the music industry for over two decades, one of the best aspects of becoming a musician in Bangladesh is that if we can pull the listeners' heartstrings and inspire something in them, they tend to be lifelong companions of our music, explained Ghani. Lastly, he also mentioned another challenging aspect of success in the music industry: the lack of people willing to spare expenses to support artists.
Tune into our YouTube channel for the entire interview. Keep an eye as we unravel the hidden and rising stars of BracU in the music industry every week!

Some people choose music, and for some, music chooses them. Their lives become inseparably entwined with melodies, rhythms, and stories—shaped by the journey that music takes them on. In this episode of Tunes of BracU, we feature such a person, Sayad Azmaine (Senior, ESS), an Anthropology major. Sayad wears many hats—singer-songwriter, bassist, and cover artist.
Playing the guitar came naturally to Sayad, and about 11 years ago, he recorded a song and uploaded it to YouTube. Since then, music hasn’t left him. Interestingly, he had no prior experience playing bass, but when he heard his favourite band, Firoze Jong , was looking for a bassist, he decided to learn along the way—and it worked.
Currently, Sayad is working with Hatirpool Sessions, where his latest original track is set to be released soon.
For Sayad, music is akin to meditation—a process where as if lyrics were waiting to be found. Creating music is his way of coping up with this world. For young musicians, he believes being a bit delulu can help a lot. They just need to start and see where the journey takes them.

Not all musical talents sing—some write lyrics that echo in our hearts. Zakir Hossain Razu, a staff member working at the Office of Operations at Brac University and a gifted lyricist, began his artistic journey in 2018, turning poetry into timeless songs. Inspired by Brac University students to further explore his talents, he published “বসন্তের শেষে” and “মনের ক্যানভাসে” which captured the hearts of many. Razu’s hometown played a significant role in shaping his artistic soul, immersing him in the richness of folk music that became the backbone of his lyrics. His first song, in which he wrote both lyrics and composed a tune, gained immense popularity within a year and went viral in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Yet, his path wasn’t easy—rejections initially marked his career as a lyricist. But his persistence paid off, as his songs eventually gained widespread love, becoming much beloved songs in India and Bangladesh. Though Razu’s artistry earned him honors at Kushtia and Mymensingh, he still yearns for national recognition. He uploads his songs to his YouTube channel to preserve his creations, ensuring they reach a global audience and remain timeless.
Razu’s message is clear and heartfelt: “May we all listen to songs that celebrate the motherland, happiness, and meaningful emotions, steering away from anything obscene.” His dream is simple yet profound—to continue creating good-quality music that resonates with the love of people everywhere.

Lalon says his uncle blessed him with the iconic name, citing legendary mystic poet Lalon Shah as the inspiration. Lalon's journey began as an artist, as he quickly took influence from his guru. Later, Lalon became obsessed with the rising western rock scene of the early 2000s and asked for his first guitar from his mother. He quickly became a fan of bands like Linkin Park and Green Day. These bands molded Lalon into the artist he is today. For Bengali inspiration, Lalon was quick to credit Nagar Baul's James. Recently, Lalon joined DeadEnd, a band that is comprised of young, talented musicians. They perform cover songs across the city and work on their own original music.
Lalon's favorite experience performing for a live audience was at BRACU's Residential Semester. On the Cultural Night of RS62, Lalon and other musicians covered Queen's "We Will Rock You" to his energetic batchmates.

Tunes of BracU - 2 : Raahim Rubaiyat Teertho
Music is an everyday part of our lives. And what would fill our silences if not for the musicians around us? Raahim Rubaiyat Teertho (Senior, CS) is someone just like that: an aspiring musician whose growing presence in the music scene catches our eye.
Starting his journey with vocal lessons from a young age, Teertho’s passion has been a trajectory. Starting a band with his friends, ‘A-Kid’, has not been an easy journey either. But his firm belief remains that whatever he has achieved till now, a big thanks goes to his family, who has never stopped him from pursuing his dreams. And, of course, what would life be without
supportive friends around us? Though now mainly focused on covers such as Radiohead, his band plans to launch a song soon by the end of this year. Jumping between genres and not submitting to a norm is mainly what he feels his songs focus on.

Tunes of Bracu-1: Farhat Tarannum
Tunes of BracU -1 : Farhat Tarannum
For some people, home is not the four walls they live in rather, it is bound by tunes of a language few people can converse in. Their art not only heals the heart but also immerses them in the timeless rhythms so deeply they cannot remember a time when it was not a part of their lives. Such is the story of Farhat Tarannum (Senior, CSE), who grew up in an environment of creative passionates where the craze for music flowed into her veins forever.
Farhat spent her childhood listening to her mom and uncles singing or composing beautiful classic pieces. When her friends suggested during the COVID-19 lockdown to share her art with the world, little did she know more than 37,000 pairs of ears would appreciate and find solace in her melodious voice on songs ranging from Hindi and Bengali classics to English songs like Goo goo dolls and Until I saw you there are times she feels overwhelmingly happy about the huge responses and requests and love that drops in her socials.

A press release from BRAC University faculties :
We Stand in Solidarity: BRAC University Teachers Unite for Student Safety
We, the like minded faculties of BRAC University, in our individual capacities, stand out of love
and concern for the safety of the students and against the unlawful activities that are taking place
jeopardizing the students’ right to peacefully protest. We are a collective of teachers, acting out
of our own personal sense of morality, without the endorsement of BRAC University, for the
injustices happening around us go against the very fabric of humanity.
Although we have stepped into August, the horrors of the massacre inflicted on the students and
general public of Bangladesh still haunts us. On 18 July 2024, in particular, police opened fire on
a peaceful student protest at BRAC University, the assault included rubber bullets, live rounds,
and tear shells shot into the campus from its main entrance. We condemn the continued violent
tactics implemented by the law enforcement, misrepresentations and insensitivity with which the
students' just demands are being undermined.
While teachers stood in support and awe of the valor and determination of the students to right
the wrongs, more were with us in spirit, united infront of BRAC University main gate at 08:30
am, 35th July, 2024 to voice our rage and grief over the lives lost, injured and wrongfully
arrested.
