โซฟี ดัชเชสแห่งเอดินเบอระ ทรงเจริญพระชันษา 60 ปี ในวันที่ 20 มกราคม 2025 ทรงเป็นหนึ่งในสมาชิกพระบรมวงศ์ที่ทรงงานและปฏิบัติพระกรณียกิจมากที่สุดในพระราชสำนัก ซึ่งนอกเหนือจากพระกรณียกิจในพระปรมาภิไธยแล้ว ยังทรงงานด้านการกุศลและองค์กรต่างๆที่ทรงรับไว้ในพระอุปถัมภ์อีกจำนวนมากอีกด้วย
ดัชชสแห่งเอดินเบอระ (หรือเดิม โซฟี เฮเลน รีส-โจนส์) ประสูติที่เมืองออกซ์ฟอร์ด ด้วยครอบครัวย้ายถิ่นพำนักไปยังมณฑลเคนต์ตั้งแต่ยังเด็ก และเริ่มศึกษาที่โรงเรียนประถมศึกษาดัลลิชคอลเลจ และโรงเรียนสตรีเคนต์คอลเลจ และสำเร็จการศึกษาจากวิทยาลัยเวสต์เคนต์ จากนั้นได้เริ่มทำงานในบริษัทด้านประชาสัมพันธ์แก่บริษัทต่างๆ ก่อนจะเปิดสำนักงานประชาสัมพันธ์ของตนเองร่วมกับหุ้นส่วนเป็นเวลา 5 ปี
โซฟี ได้พบกับเจ้าฟ้าชายเอ็ดเวิร์ดครั้งแรกในปี 1987 ซึ่งขณะนั้นทรงคบหากับเพื่อนของเธออยู่ กระทั่งได้มีพบกันหลายครั้งในงานผลิตรายการโทรทัศน์ โดยเฉพาะงานผลิตสื่อซัมเมอร์ ชาเลนจ์ ในพระดำริเพื่อหารายได้เข้ากองทุนการกุศล เป็นช่วงเวลาที่ทั้งสองตกลงเริ่มคบหากันในปี 1993 กระทั่งมีประกาศการทรงหมั้นในเดือนมกราคม 1999 และจัดพิธีเสกสมรสที่วิหารเซนต์จอร์จ ในพระราชวังวินด์เซอร์ เมื่อวันที่ 19 มิถุนายน 1999
โอกาสนี้ สมเด็จพระราชินีนาถเอลิซาเบธที่ 2 มีพระบรมราชโองการโปรดเกล้าโปรดกระหม่อมสถาปนาดำรงพระบรรดาศักดิ์ที่ เอิร์ลแห่งเวสเซกซ์ และไวเคานต์เซเวิร์น ทำให้โซฟี ได้ดำรงบรรดาศักดิ์เคียงคู่พระสวามีที่ เคานต์เตสแห่งเวสเซกส์ พระชายา และวันที่ 10 มีนาคม 2023 ในโอกาสที่เจ้าชายเอ็ดเวิร์ด ทรงเจริญพระชันษา 59 ปี สมเด็จพระเจ้าชาร์ลส์ที่ 3 รัชกาลปัจจุบัน พระบรมราชโองการโปรดเกล้าโปรดกระหม่อมสถาปนาดำรงพระบรรดาศักดิ์ที่ ดยุคแห่งเอดินเบอระ ทำให้โซฟีได้ดำรงพระบรรดาศักดิ์ที่ ดัชเชสแห่งเอดินเบอระ พระชายา เคียงคู่พระสวามี
ทั้งสองพระองค์ มีพระธิดา 1 คน และพระโอรส 1 คน ได้แก่ เลดี้ ลูอิซ วินด์เซอร์ และเจมส์ เอิร์ลแห่งเวสเซกส์ (ซึ่งเดิมคือไวเคานต์เซเวิร์น) ทั้งเจ้าชายเอ็ดเวิร์ดและโซฟี ทรงเป็นที่ชื่นชมถึงชีวิตอภิเษกสมรสที่ราบรื่นที่สุด ขณะที่พระเชษฐาและพระเชษฐภคินีล้วนผ่านการทรงหย่ามาแล้ว นอกจากนี้ ยังเป็นที่กล่าวกันว่า โซฟีทรงเป็นพระสุณิสาที่สมเด็จพระราชินีนาถทรงโปรดที่สุด
ในฐานะสมาชิกพระบรมวงศ์พระองค์หนึ่ง ตลอดเส้นทางพระชนม์ชีพของดัชเชสแห่งเอดินเบอระ เต็มไปด้วยพระกรณียกิจประดุจทรงงานเต็มเวลา ด้วยโครงการ กองทุน และองค์กรต่างๆที่ทรงรับไว้ในพระอุปถัมภ์มากกว่า 70 องค์กร แต่ละปีได้เสด็จไปทรงเยี่ยมและทอดพระเนตรการดำเนินงานตามโรงเรียน โรงพยาบาล ค่ายทหาร ตลอดจนกอลทุน และโครงการประชาคมท้องถิ่นต่างๆ
นอกจากนี้ ยังมีความสนพระทัยในด้านการสนับสนุนเยาวชน บุคคลทุพพลภาพ ตลอดจนบุคคลที่สูญเสียการมองเห็น นอกจากนี้ ยังสนับสนุนด้านความเท่าเทียมกันในสังคม ตลอดหลายปีที่ผ่านมา ทรงเป็นอีกกระบอกเสียงในการขจัดความขัดแย้งและความรุนแรงต่อสตรี พร้อมทั้งสนับสนุนให้สตรีมีบทบาทสำคัญในสังคมมากขึ้นด้วย

Her Royal Highness Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh celebrates her 60th birthday on 20 January 2025. The Duchess is now one of the most active and hardest working members of the Royal Family. With her notable duties and public engagements, she splits her time between her work on behalf of The King across the United Kingdom and Commonwealth and support for a large number of her own charities and organisations.
The Duchess of Edinburgh was born Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones in Oxford. Her family moved to Kent when she was still young. She began her education at Dulwich College Preparatory School and then Kent College School for Girls, before completing her education at West Kent College. After leaving school, Sophie embarked on a career in public relations, working for a variety of firms, before opening her own public relations agency which she co-ran for five years.
Sophie met Prince Edward for the first time in 1987, but he was dating her friend at the time. They met again several years later at a promotion shoot for the Prince Edward Summer Challenge to raise money for charity, when they formed a connection. Their relationship ran smoothly until when they were ready to announce their engagement in January 1999.
The wedding took place at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle on 19 June 1999. It was announced that Queen Elizabeth II had conferred the titles of The Earl of Wessex and Viscount Severn upon Prince Edward. Sophie then became known as Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex.
On 10 March 2023 - Prince Edward's 59th birthday - it was announced that King Charles III had conferred the Dukedom of Edinburgh on his brother, with Her Royal Highness becoming The Duchess of Edinburgh.
Their Royal Highnesses have two children; Lady Louise Windsor, and James, Earl of Wessex (previously Viscount Severn). Edward and Sophie are regarded the most successful couple in their marriage life as he never divorced his spouse like his three siblings. Sophie was also once rumoured to be the late Queen’s most favourite daughter-in-law.
Much of the day-to-day working life of The Duchess of Edinburgh is dedicated to her role as Patron of over 70 charities and organisations. Each year, she undertakes hundreds of visits to schools, hospitals, military bases, charities and community groups to see their work first-hand and to highlight it to the wider world.
The Duchess’s Patronages reflect her wide range of interests which include supporting young people and children in need of additional care, supporting people with disabilities, the elimination of avoidable blindness and championing the sight loss community, as well as agriculture and gender equality. Over the past years, Her Royal Highness has also committed to raising awareness for the disproportionate impact of conflict on women and girls, and the positive role women play in building peace.
