How to improve your rankings the right way

1. Clean up your websites index, anything that doesn't contribute should be blocked or culled

2. Use search console api to do a full data pull on your domain, segment out URLs in growth from those that are stagnant and those in decline

3. Evaluate what's in decline, is it worth saving and does/can it add value to your site and offering? if yes queue for revamp, if no cull and http 410 or 301 if preserving link equity

4. Revamp content in decline, ensure no cannibalisation is responsible for decline, if there is look at consolidating into the parent URL (cannibalisation parent) if no cannibalisation is present conduct an NLP audit using Inlinks

5. During content revamp take the lead query by click and impression and check in Ahrefs keyword explorer and use the SERP positions over time to see what the SERP looks like, correlate your positions against the SERP and look to see if and how much of the SERP changed

6. On the content revamp, review end user intent, change orientation of content to prioritize what matters the most

7. Use AlsoAsked to dump out faq data and incorporate into your content revamp

8. Use GA to segment your URL to see behavior flow, then look at rejigging internal links

9. Use screaming frog SEO spider and gsc internal link counts to see page weighting, find other pages on your site with appropriate anchors that do not link and link them, you can use the site:yoursite(.)com intext:"anchor text" to find opportunities

10. Put your URL in Ahrefs, go to backlinks, use referring page traffic filter and put from 1 and hit enter, if no backlinks have traffic use niche edits where pages have traffic and are topically relevant - trickle flow links in

11. Make a copy of the page for testing and then wait. For 3 months count the volume of queries the page has after the above, compare to the same 3 month period the previous year. Look for growth, you can use search console or search console api for this, search analytics for sheets is a great extension for this

12. Go to surfer and use the SERP analyzer, set your lead query by click and then impression after, run the analyzer for your target location. When it's run change the averages view from 10 to 1

13. Then, make a note of sites that gained rank for ahrefs keyword position explorer, then evaluate the body word counts for those URLS to see if the SERP shift has been in favour of shorter / longer form content

14. If your content query counts go up great, then export monthly from gsc and then copy and paste into a keyword cloud generator and look for changing trends in your query profile, monitor average positions in GSC ensuring you filter down to your target country and comparing by device

15. Repeat

16. Whilst doing the above, drive high quality links based on brand into root domain

17. Find relevant threads on Quora and reddit - participate in giving advice and then drop a link to the page you've been revamping

How did Tiktok grow into a global phenomenon so fast in the last 3-4 years?

- Great product? Yes. But there are other great products too.

- Awesome recommendation engine? YouTube & Amazon have had it for more than 15 years.

- Content Virality? To some extent, Yes. But that's not unique too.

However, there is something that acted as the backbone for its growth that no one talks about.

A well-executed massive-scale Performance Marketing.

A few years back, Tiktok spent more than $1Bn a year in the US alone for user acquisition through Facebook, Google, Snapchat, etc.

Across the globe, their spending on performance marketing would have been more than $2Bn per year.

This number would be at least 2-3x for 2021.

Last year they spent ~$18Bn overall in marketing.

Recently, a Google exec said that 40% of Gen Z search on Instagram or TikTok (for lunch options).

Many people laugh at the thought that TikTok could replace Google Search.

Of course, that's a stretch.

But thinking Google can't be beaten a mistake.

3 reasons why

1/ Never underestimate the potential of compound growth.

TikTok's traffic is nowhere close to Google's.

BUT TikTok's traffic is growing MUCH faster than Google's.

(TikTok is on the 2nd Y-axis in the chart).

And Google's traffic has been flat to down since Q1 2020.

2/ This is web traffic and doesn't include app traffic - TikTok's superpower.

TikTok is the king of the app store charts with 3.5b downloads!

App downloads in June '22:
• Google = 8m
• Youtube = 10m
• Tik Tok = 20m

3/ People forget that there was a time when no one could imagine Yahoo getting kicked off the throne.

Then Google overtook Yahoo within a few years with better technology.

TikTok's algorithm is superior, too.

No company is unbeatable.

3/ Other vertical search engines started to bite chunks out of Google's search monopoly:
• Amazon for shopping
• Pinterest for inspiration
• Booking for travel

There is a possibility that vertical search engines will become a big pain for Google.
