Crew Missing After Cargo Ship Sinks Between Japan, South Korea

Tokyo: Japan and South Korea's coast guards were searching Wednesday 25th January 2023 for eight crew from a cargo ship that sank between the two countries, after 14 others were rescued.
"A total of 14 have been rescued," a spokesman for the Japanese coast guard told AFP.

"We don't know their condition and nationalities yet," he added, declining to be named.
He said six of the crew had been rescued by South Korea's coast guard, which was assisting the operation.

Eleven of those rescued so far were "unconscious", the Jeju Coast Guard told AFP, adding that the rescued crew members were being transported to Japan's southwestern Nagasaki.
The Jin Tian sent a distress signal late on Tuesday evening from a position around 110 kilometres (68 miles) west of the remote and uninhabited Danjo islands in far southwestern Japan.

Three private ships were in the area and helped pick up several of the stranded crew members, Japan's coast guard said.
A Japanese coast guard plane and two ships were at the scene, with additional Japanese and South Korean vessels en route, officials from both countries said.

The ship's captain used a satellite phone to tell South Korean coast guard officials that he and the crew would abandon the sinking ship in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Jeju Coast Guard said.
Contact with the crew was then lost.

Japan's government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno confirmed that the country's coast guard was cooperating with South Korean authorities in the rescue mission.
The accident came as a cold snap hits much of Asia, with daytime temperatures in some of the Japanese islands nearest the rescue site reaching just three degrees Celsius.

The 6,651-ton Jin Tian is registered in Hong Kong, and the crew on board included 14 Chinese nationals and eight people from Myanmar, Japan's coast guard said.

An Egyptian cargo vessel capsized in Turkey, sending a number of containers into the sea. A video circulating on social media shows the moment the vessel named Sea Eagle turning to the side and sinking. It was docked at Turkey's Iskenderum port and the process of unloading the boxes was going in when the incident took place, according to TradeWinds, a website that reports on shipping news. The incident took place on Saturday 18th September 2022, the outlet said, adding that the vessel was built in 1984.
The video of the incident on Reddit shows that a port lift truck was unloading the containers when the 3120 DWT cargo ship keeled over. The people standing near the ship immediately moved away after hearing a whistling sound.
The ship quickly submerged in water, leaving the crew members and people offloading the cargo shocked.
Turkey's Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure later said on Twitter that 24 containers were lost from the Togo-flagged vessel and a minor oil leak was also detected.

Fortunately, all crew members were evacuated safely and no injuries were reported.
The government later issued a statement in which it said that the ship was suffering from stability issues and efforts to balance it did not yield results, according to another outlet G Captain.
The cause of the accident is being investigated by port authorities in Turkey. Meanwhile, the operation to offload the ship's fuel and retrieve the container is currently going on.
The ship had reached Iskenderum from Mersin, also in Turkey, on September 17. As per the crew, all onboard systems were functioning normally (NDTV).

A woman holidaying on a cruise was rescued on 25.06.2023 after falling from the 10th deck, according to NBC News. Quoting the US Coast Guard, the outlet said that the incident happened near the Dominican Republic. The Coast Guard got the call to rescue the 42-year-old woman, an American citizen, at 5.44pm (local time) on 25th June Sunday. She was on board Mariner of the Seas cruise ship, which was 27 nautical miles south of Punta Cana on its way to Willemstad, in the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao, the outlet further said.
"The passenger was recovered alive and reported to be in good health, after reportedly falling into the water from 10th deck of the ship," the Coast Guard said.

"No medical evacuation of the passenger was requested by the cruise ship. The passenger was being kept on the cruise ship's medical facility and later transferred to the Hospital in Willemstad, Curacao for evaluation," it added.
The woman's name has not been released by the authorities. She spent 45 minutes in the water, as per Fox News.

Royal Caribbean, which operates the ship, also confirmed the incident in a statement. "Thankfully, the guest was successfully recovered and was brought on board. Our care team is now offering assistance and support to them and their traveling party," the outlet quoted the company as saying in a statement.
