The goal of the South Asian Showcase is to highlight the shared hopes, dreams, and aspirations of the nearly two billion people living in South Asia. In the variety of their subject matters and treatment, these four films portray the incredible contrast and richness of the lived lives in South Asia.

The International Film Initiative of Bangladesh (IFIB) has now expanded Dhaka to Cannes, launched in 2017, to the region of South Asia.

Through various initiatives, IFIB prepares the new generation of creative filmmakers from Bangladesh, and now the region of South Asia, to go for bigger challenges. By reaching out to world-renowned film festivals, programmers, filmmakers, critics, and global art, culture, and film bodies, IFIB aims to make Bangladesh and South Asian cinema known, recognized, and supported on the global stage.

This weekend, the International Film Initiative of Bangladesh presented four Docs-in-Progress in the South Asia Showcase at the Marché du Film. Altogether, 32 films have been shown in eight curated showcases from regions across the globe. This is the first time a South Asia Showcase has been presented at Cannes Docs.

We are incredibly proud to announce that two of our films have been recognized by the Cannes Docs jury.

Devi, directed by Subina Shrestha and produced by Rosie Garthwaite received an honorary mention from the jury.

MUNNI, directed by Tahrima Khan (pictured below) and produced by Abu Shahed Emon, received the official award from Think-Film Impact Production, a creative impact consultancy that explores innovative ways to merge the worlds of film and policy.

The goal of the South Asian Showcase is to highlight the shared hopes, dreams, and aspirations of the nearly two billion people living in South Asia. A huge congratulations to all of the 32 participants of Marché du Film - Festival de Cannes this year! The jury had a very challenging task choosing the winners of the 6 awards.

Out of the 4 very special and inaugural South Asia Showcase participants, we are very proud that one, ‘Devi’, directed by Subina Shrestha and produced by Rosie Garthwaite received an honorary mention. And another, ‘Munni’, directed by Tahrima Khan and produced by Abu Shahed Emon received the Think-Film Impact Production Award!

Cannes Docs 2021 offers an exclusive series of eight showcases of curated docs-in-progress in finalization stage, aiming to hit the circuit within a few weeks or months. These showcases of docs-in-progress are primarily designed for international decision makers looking for fresh new titles – in particular festival programmers and sales agents –, but also generally addressed to any potential gap financing or post-production partner.

International Film Initiative of Bangladesh (IFIB) is presenting four documentary films from South Asia in an advanced stage of production at Docs-in-Progress section. These films in their variety of subject matters and treatment indicate the amazing contrast and richness of lived lives in South Asia with nearly 2 billion people. For the first time, a delegation representing South Asian filmmakers will partner with to present four docs-in-progress. The films presented are from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, and Nepal and will, like the other 28 docs-in-progress, compete for a grand prize of 10,000 euros as well as five other prizes.

The event is designed for producers with films in advanced stages of production who are looking for a festival premiere or a sales agent, or for sellers and programmers looking for the latest undiscovered documentaries.

The guests of the coming episode of “FILM TALK with Fahmida” (2020) are two internationally acclaimed academics and researchers, Dr Lotte Hoek and Prof. Dr Zakir Hossain Raju. Their main area of interest is Bangladeshi cinema and they have also written extensively on Bangladeshi cinema in intentional publications such as books and journals. Lotte Hoek is the author of “Cut-Pieces Celluloid Obscenity and Popular Cinema in Bangladesh” (2013) and Zakir Hossain Raju has written the book entitled “Bangladesh Cinema and National Identity: In Search of the Modern?” (2015). This episode will focus on their scholarly works and thoughts on Bangladeshi cinema. The show will go live on 10 September, Thursday night at 9:35 Pm (Bangladesh time) from “Dr Fahmida Akhter” page. Great news indeed as there is a project from Bangladesh too! NOC (No Objection Certificate), a documentary film project by director Krishnakali Islam and producer Tareq Ahmed will be at the Marché. Cannes Docs 2000 Spotlight is an amazing platform for the projects initially chosen from the Dhaka Doc Lab. Congratulations to all involved. IFIB is proud to be part of this journey.
