-A Calypsonian is a musician who has studied calypso culture and music and memorized its traditional rhythms and verses.
While it is true that their themes are tropical, the most important musicians of the genre can improvise a calypso on any proposed theme.
It is important to differentiate between a calypsonian and a calypso singer, such as @theharrybelafonte,who performs calypsos but without imbibing the basics of calypso culture and certainly without composing calypsos.
In Aruba, this culture was adopted from Trinidad, the birthplace of calypso, where calypsonians competed against each other in ad hoc sessions held during carnival, but since the 1950s, the competitions are held in organized calypso competitions. A traditional form of calypso, such as war calypso, was used to conclude the calypso shows and improvisers would deliver verses to praise themselves and disqualify others.
For a long time, calypsonians took flamboyant artistic names, although this practice declined until it became uncommon.
The most important calypsonians of the 20th century are Lord Kitchener, Roaring Lion, Lord Invader, Mighty Sparrow (in Trinidad and Tobago) and Walter Ferguson (in Costa Rica). Lord boxoe ,young QuickSilver ,Red Sisco (in Aruba).
