Clarice Beckett used to wander the coast of Melbourne, with her home-made cart filled with painting supplies. Beckett found an infinite and subtle beauty in her surroundings, and preferred the diffuse light of the morning or dusk. As a compulsive painter, she was known to never rework and seldom sign her canvases. Here, she offers us a small glimpse of the water – she instead focuses our attention on the bathers, beach cricket, the scrubby bush and the smooth, pale yellow sand. She was born in 1887.

In her sixties, Maria Concetta Cassarà began painting by chance after watching her granddaughter while she drew. From that moment on she dedicated almost every evening, sometimes well into the late hours, to creative accomplishment, wheeling a trolley full of sheets of paper, brushes and tempera into the living room where she sat at a table in front of the television set. Featured in Raw Vision 73.

❄️Happy Birthday, Wassily Kandinsky – the Russian painter was born 155 years ago today! He created this picture during his time in Bavaria, where he lived with his partner Gabriele Münter. Kandinsky’s artistic journey into the abstract had already begun at this time, although you can still clearly see the trees and houses in the background. What do you think of it?

She was born Grace Smith, in Neutral Bay, Sydney, second of five children of London-born solicitor Ernest Smith and his wife Grace, née Fisher, who was the daughter of the rector of Cossington in Leicestershire. The family moved to Thornleigh, New South Wales around 1890. Grace attended Abbotsleigh School for Girls in Wahroonga 1905–09 where Albert Collins and Alfred Coffey took art classes. From 1910–11 she studied drawing with Antonio Dattilo Rubbo. From 1912–14 she and her sister lived in England, staying with an aunt at Wi******er where she attended drawing classes as well as classes at Speck in Germany, and was exposed to paintings by Watteau in Berlin.
After returning to Sydney in 1914 she attended Dattilo Rubbo's painting classes alongside Norah Simpson and took an interest in modernist theories. Her The Sock Knitter (1915) was arguably Australia's first post-Impressionist painting.
Smith adopted the middle name "Cossington" in 1920.
Her work was greatly respected by fellow-artists Roland Wakelin and Roy de Maistre. She exhibited with the Royal Art Society of New South Wales from 1915, the Society of Artists from 1919 and Thea Proctor's Contemporary Group at Adrian Feint's Grosvenor Gallery from 1926–28, and from 1932 to 1971,at the Macquarie Galleries.
Her painting is characterized by individual, square brush strokes with bright unblended colours. Her many paintings of Sydney landscapes, still lifes, and interiors include Kuringai Avenue (1943), Fruit in the Window (1957), and, arguably her most famous painting, The Lacquer Room (1935). She received acclaim late in her career, and in 1973 a major retrospective exhibition of her work toured Australia.

DAVID HOCKNEY - Montcalm Interior with 2 Dogs.
Oil on canvas.

David Hockney’s large-scale painting Montcalm Interior with 2 Dogs from 1988, a highly regarded period within the artist’s career.
Lit with the bright glow of California sunshine, Montcalm Interior with 2 Dogs encapsulates Hockney’s evolution in the tradition of interior painting, while also displaying his unique interpretation of the genre. Painted in 1988 – the same year as his first, critically-acclaimed U.S. retrospective at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art – the canvas captures a room within Hockney’s Montcalm Avenue home in Los Angeles, which he purchased in the summer of 1979.

This home went on to inspire a number of the artist’s most iconic paintings of the late-1980s, including the sister painting to the present work, Large Interior, Los Angeles, which has been held in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York since 1989. Montcalm Interior with 2 Dogs was featured prominently in the artist’s 1992-93 retrospective organized by Fundación Juan March, Madrid, which traveled to both the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels and the Palau de la Virreina, Barcelona. The work has not been exhibited publicly since.

At once highly personalized and deeply rooted in art historical tradition, Montcalm Interior with 2 Dogs exemplifies Hockney’s ability to merge the painterly techniques of the past with his own distinctive, inventive, and remarkably intimate experience of reality. Painting with vivid brushstrokes and vibrant, raw colors that clearly evoke the post-Impressionist masters whom he greatly admired, Hockney flattens space to enhance the emotional and physical immediacy of the viewing experience. In this way, Montcalm Interior with 2 Dogs showcases the rich, saturated color application and deft handling of space that are characteristic of Hockney’s greatest paintings.
