Sam McLennan is now 1 day into his voyage from Hobart to Sydney, sailing on a raft made from rubbish found on Tasmania's coastlines.

It comes after two years of hard work building the vessel, which was finally given the tick of approval by MAST recently.

He hopes to raise awareness about water pollution, saying his life is "on the line" but he hopes it's worth it "for the future of the planet".

: Additional firefighting resources have been called in after part of a registered burn south of Wynyard escaped its containment lines.

The large blaze near Mount Hicks has sent a plume of thick smoke into the air that can be seen across the north-west coast.

The Tasmania Fire Service says crews have just arrived at the scene and will work to contain the blaze.

Construction is about to start on a 32-foot-long steel box, dubbed “Earth’s Black Box”, on Tasmania's West Coast.

The box will contain hard drives filled with data on how humans are 'destroying the planet', documenting how civilisation may crash.

It's set to be built near the Queenstown Airport, funded by philanthropic donors.

Long Way From Home
Acrylic on linen
185 x 170 cm

From the artist:
“I made the decision to relocate to Tasmania, driven by the desire to immerse myself in one of the world's most breathtaking landscapes.
Little did I anticipate the profound impact that would occur between myself and the ancient river systems of the takayna / Tarkine region. In the misty predawn hours of a winter’s day, my husband and I set out in our kayak along the isolated waterways of the Savage River.
As a person originating from Barbados, this rugged environment presented a stark contrast to my upbringing. However, as the sun rose, casting its gentle light upon the cool temperate rainforest of myrtle and pine trees, a sense of reverence and ancient wisdom descended upon the river, creating space for growth and self reflection.
‘Long Way From Home’ serves not only as a visual record of that transcendent moment but also invites the viewer into the perennial nature of the river. It captures the paradox of its simultaneous permanence and fragility, prompting contemplation on our collective responsibility towards the environment. Through this painting, I hope to initiate a dialogue that encourages a deeper connection with our surroundings, fostering a greater understanding of the delicate balance we must uphold.”
