Meet the people documenting and archiving Britain’s Black communities.

Black in the Day and Rudeboys and Rollups speak to our penchant for nostalgia by collating photographs and memories, and preserving them online. GOOD STUFF •

We may be a little Barbied-out right now, however The New Yorker takes an interesting lens at I.P. based filmmaking and its rise within theatres. Whether we’re on board or not.

Gerwig’s agent Jeremy Barber reflects on the partnership “Is it a great thing that our great creative actors and filmmakers live in a world where you can only take giant swings around consumer content and mass-produced products?” he said. “I don’t know. But it is the business. So, if that’s what people will consume, then let’s make it more interesting, more complicated.”

GOOD WORK •

Endlessly proud to announce that David Robinson Smith’s short film, ‘We Used To Own Houses’, will premiere as an official selection at the Melbourne International Film Festival, as part of the Accelerator Lab Shorts program.

Written and directed by David Robinson Smith, the film profiles the housing crisis - set against a poem by Alasdair Dunn, taken from Hostile Architecture by Ashenspire.

This incredible film was a labour of love and couldn’t have been made without the generosity from our cast, crew, and suppliers. Lots of love and see you in Melbourne!

Good Oil’s Nick Payne: Cannes 2023, (belated) Lessons from a Newbie.

On Footwear •
You might have dreams of sneakers and suits, but by Welcome Drinks you’ll learn that everyone is going to see your toenails. Embrace it. All publicity is good publicity, and every foot is worth a thousand words.

On Seating •
Easy to feel nervous, hard to go wrong. Unless you’re in direct sunlight. Learned this pretty quickly at La Colombe D’or. But better to sweat in a borrowed suit than on a Picasso (sorry Sam Long).

On Pool Parties •
People actually swim! First at the wonderful MOFA / Rumble party, then at our Good Oil Villa party on Wednesday. Nothing like a midweek dip and drink to break up the bustle and beat the heat.

VERY GOOD STUFF •

Delighted at the news that Matthew Thorne’s ‘Marungka Tjalatjunu’ has won the Documentary Australia Award at this year’s Sydney Film Festival. Congratulations to both Matthew and Derik on their well deserved acknowledgment.

Marungka Tjalatjunu (Dipped in Black) is an incredibly evocative, precise, and raw film. Exploratory and playful in its form, the film tests the line of fact and fiction, and in turn unearths something that sits at the root of the human experience. The film has a highly accomplished and distinct aesthetic that allows for a powerful contemplation of culture, Country, identity and belonging.

GOOD FILM •

"To shoot film was a choice myself and Matthew the director made early on prior to scouting as we have always found we do our most meaningful work on film, it’s a great challenge together and requires great trust. Being partially documentary and having minimal lighting, we decided on all 500t high speed stock which gave us the ability to shoot in a range of lighting conditions. It also meant there was a greater level of grain in the image and this helped us illustrate a greater sense of realism. The film also deals with Deriks memories growing up in community. We felt here that the texture of the image and the dreamy tones of the way film captured the landscape helped us draw back into his memories as a child."

Is the Murdoch family intentionally imitating art that imitates their lives?

Allegations that one of the siblings is feeding HBO lines and collaborating with the shows producers suggest an even headier web of drama than the show's plot lines. This revealing Vanity Fair article highlights the blurred lines between where the drama of the TV show ends, and the real lives of the Murdoch dynasty begins.

GOOD STUFF •

Good Oil director Matthew Thorne and Derik Lynch receive the Jury’s Silver Bear for the short film “Dipped in Black (Marungka tjalatjunu)” at the Berlinale Film Festival in Berlin.

On how the film came to be, Matthew said. “Our starting point for the film came from a chance meeting during the Adelaide Fringe Festival. Derik and I were at an artists bar at the festival, dancing away. This is how we met – on the dance floor of that outdoor venue in the hot 40 degree Australian summer heat. From there Derik began to call me often, and I asked him if i could write down some of the story he was telling me about his life. That grew into the film today.”

Derik said: “The short form makes people want more. The question we’ve always been asked when we show it, is ‘We want more! When can we see more?’. Leaving people with that feeling is important to me. This is just a glimpse for a white audience to see our beautiful country, and hear na small part of one of our many stories.”

Vulture’s Andrea Long Chu on HBO’s The Last of Us. Read at the link in our bio.

“The question was never whether The Last of Us would make for compelling television, since anyone who had played it could tell you it basically already was that. The real question, buried in the praise, was why a story with such cinematic ambitions had bothered being a video game to begin with.”

GOOD STUFF •

Josiah Watson captures the intersection of chaos and beauty through the balletic choreography of cars in motion. Link in bio.

Shot with a raw, naturalistic quality, Fun City (NOWNESS) shows that New Zealand’s speedway tracks are unlikely sites of visual poetry.

Josiah: “The beautifully frenetic track influenced the way we shot the film — we listened to it as we shot, and let the music guide us. Our main goal was for any frame to have a naturalism and documentary-style quality. Mixing in the sound of the speedway brings that tangibility and feeling that you were actually there.”

GOOD STUFF •

Richard Brody of the New Yorker on the state of the Hollywood economy. Link in bio.

He writes of a deepening economic dilemma — the widening gap between “spectacular successes and quiet failures.” As streaming and prestige TV erode the stability of a theatrical release, what happens to the Indie film?

Brody finds hope in the world of books, where “a single blockbuster can help to subside a publishing house all on its own, the giant box-office take of a franchise film can be all to the good: its success gives the participants cash and power to spread around to more ambitious and personal projects.”

While “the future of the art will be increasingly found at lower economic altitudes,” Brody thinks there might also be salvation in the Academy Awards: “Good movies will not stop being produced as long as Oscars are worth more to filmmakers, actors, producers, and even streaming services than the money that it takes to chase them.”

Here’s hoping.

GOOD STUFF •

Spice up your Tuesday with John Lahr’s profile of Emma Thompson for the New Yorker.

With a career spanning decades, and as the only person ever to win an Academy Award in both the acting and screenwriting categories, Thompson’s contributions to the world of film are truly singular.

“No matter how parlous or hilarious the circumstances of her characters, Thompson radiates a subliminal solidity, a sort of ‘f**k it’ that is the opposite of neurosis.”

GOOD WORK •

Tom Campbell’s AACTA nominated film ‘The Bends’ has been named Short of the Week.

‘The Bends’ is an impressionistic portrait of a Mixed Martial Arts fighter who must wrestle with the news she is pregnant in the lead-up to the import important fight of her career.

Campbell described the filmmaking approach as a kind of “slow cinema”. Dubbed a docu-drama hybrid, he used the script as a blueprint but worked more nimbly and focused on “finding the moment within a moment and grounding it in truth.”

TraumaZone: stills from Adam Curtis’s new seven party docu-series, chronicling the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Each hour long episode is an extraordinary mood piece, painstakingly constructed from footage sourced by the BBC Moscow’s staff. There is no voice-over or music, only basic text information — delivered sparingly.

Curtis explained to The Guardian, “I didn’t want to intrude pointlessly, but let viewers simply experience what was happening, because it was out of this — the anger, violence, desperation, and overwhelming corruption — that Vladimir Putin emerged.”

GOOD STUFF •

Mythos and Monumentality. An astonishing megascultpture is completed in the middle of the Nevada desert.

Michael Heizer took a flight in 1970 to find a property in the depths of the desert. Instead he came across a basin, backdropped by mountains, isolated however not barren, and luckily cheap to procure. Work on the sculpture ‘City’ started there in 1972 and has been ongoing ever since.

50 years and $40m later, the 2.5 km long ‘City’ is finally open to visitors. A modern day art version of Atlantis. The ‘City’ consists of 5 phases referred to as “complexes”, a term borrowed from archaeology that refers to ancient buildings. The megalithic artwork borrowing from civilisations of the past; Angkor Wat, Machu Picchu, Easter Island, Giza.

The pioneering life’s work of Heizer consists of exquisitely groomed dirt, swells, mounds and depressions. As noted by The New Yorker ‘You’re meant to suffer it’s distances - to give yourself over to the peace and quiet. You’re meant to adapt to the subtle shifts in a desaturated palette of beiges, greys, and dusky reds, and to notice the virtuosity of slender concrete curbs drawing lines in space that snake the length of several football fields.’

GOOD STUFF •

Dennis Hopper is perhaps little known for his pursuit of painting, sculpture and photography. With a vast and enviable collection of art crammed into his Hollywood Hills home, the Easy Rider actor collated some of the best works from the 60’s and 70’s acquired on a shoestring budget.

A keen photographer himself, the photograph titled ‘Double Standard’ is probably the best known of the 18,000 images that Hopper created between 1961 and 1968. As described by The New Yorker, the image is pure cacophony, a distillation of Los Angeles as riotous streetscape, the motorised city as information overload.

GOOD FOR GOOD •

Photographer Daniel Jack Lyons has forged a body of work that is committed to visualising marginalised communities. His most recent exploration of Amazonian youth delves into how deep indigenous traditions and modern identity politics meet in a celebratory safe space, deep in the lush canopies of the rainforest.

Lyons’ debut monograph LIKE A RIVER donates a percentage of proceeds to support Casa do Rio and their important work with indigenous youth and artists.
