100 YEARS YOUNG

From silent films and Saturday matinees to roller-skating, rock gigs and sell-out shows — Thirroul’s beloved theatre has lived many lives.

Built in 1925 as Kings Theatre, the venue once packed in 1500 locals for double-feature nights, Tom & Jerry cartoons and the arrival of the “talkies”, making history as the first community venue in Australia to screen The Rainbow Man.

By the late ‘60s it traded film reels for roller skates, becoming a go-to hangout through the ‘70s and ‘80s (think teased hair, Wham tees and “Hey Mickey” blasting across the rink).

After years of uncertainty, a major restoration in 2007 transformed the space into Anita’s Theatre — now a landmark for touring artists from Suzi Quatro and Neil Finn to Lime Cordiale and The Wiggles.

A century on, this grand old building remains at the heart of Thirroul’s cultural life — holding memories from every era and still making new ones.

WALK FOR SHEREE 💕

We recently met locals David and Margot Naylor, organisers of the Eighth Annual ‘Walk for Sheree - Walk Against Cancer’ - a fundraising activity in memory of their daughter Sheree, a wife and mother of three young children, who passed away from cancer 8 years ago.

David and his family would like to encourage people to be involved this year by joining them for a leisurely 3km, 5km or 10km walk in memory of Sheree or perhaps you have someone dear to you that may have had their own battle with Cancer that you would like to dedicate the Walk to.

SUNDAY 14 DECEMBER
From 9am (registrations from 8am)
Starting at Towradgi Beach Park

A NEW DIRECTION

The Wollongong Art Prize returns this summer — reimagined, revitalised, and ready to shine a national spotlight on local creativity.

Under the new leadership of Gallery Director Daniel Mudie Cunningham, the prize has expanded to welcome all mediums, inviting artists from across Australia to submit works that connect art, community and culture.

With over 1,100 entries, including strong representation from local and First Nations artists, this year’s prize celebrates a shared spirit of creativity and renewal.

✨ The exhibition opens 6 December at Wollongong Art Gallery, with winners announced on Friday 5 December.
