The NSW Health Minister says the delivery of the new Shellharbour Hospital can't come soon enough, as Wollongong's emergency department continues to face unprecedented demand.

According to the Bureau of Health Information's latest report Wollongong paramedics responded to the third highest number of calls for help in the state between April and June.

More than 18,000 patients came through Wollongong Hospital's emergency department doors during that time, with the average person waiting 5 hours to be seen.

However, there was a slight increase of more than 7% of patients starting treatment on time compared to the same period last year.

Member for Keira Ryan Park is assuring the community the government is doing all it can to alleviate the pressure.

Instagram is overhauling the privacy settings of young users, placing them on a safer, and easily monitored account.

New 'Teen Accounts' for those under the age of 16 will automatically be set to private, with users only able to be messaged or tagged by people they follow, while sleep mode will be turned on between 10pm and 7am which will mute notifications overnight and send auto replies to DMs.

Parents will also be able to see who their teen has messaged in the past seven days, see the age-appropriate topics their teen is looking at, block out specific time periods and set daily limits.

Meta is working to switch all young users to the new format within 60-days.

Those under 16 will also now need a parent's permission to change any of the built-in protection settings.

Women escaping family, domestic and sexual violence in the Illawarra will now have access to critical holistic support, with a landmark healing and recovery centre opening today.

Located in Shellharbour, the Illawarra Women's Trauma Recovery Centre was made possible by a $25M Federal and $2M State Government investment and years of advocacy work

The facility, which is the first of it's kind in the country will provide wrap around support services to victim-survivors, including mental health, financial, legal and case work support.

Women can self-refer to the centre, where their eligibility will be assessed.

Eligible citizens are being reminded pre-poll voting for the upcoming local government elections will open this Saturday (7/09).

Residents in and around Wollongong who are unable to attend a booth on election day next Saturday (14/09) due to travel, illness, disability, religious beliefs, caring for a person, or work can cast their vote early at the Returning Officer's Office on Crown Street.

Early voting centres will also be set up at the Balgownie Village Community Centre, Dapto Ribbonwood Centre and Thirroul Community Centre.

There is no voting at any venue on Sunday (8/09).

Wollongong's beloved Santa Fest is set to make a comeback!

In July, founder Neil Webster announced the festival would wind up after more than 3 decades, citing financial and time constraints.

However, three local publicans have now pledged to save and re-brand the iconic event.

What was once perceived as a day of intense drinking will instead now celebrate live music, the Wollongong community, and charities.

More than 11 local venues are set to participate, including North Wollongong Hotel, Humber, the Illawarra Hotel, and Bevanda.

Headline acts will also be announced soon.

A tiger handler has been mauled by one of the big cats at Dreamworld.

The 47-year-old woman has been taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with deep cuts to her arm.

The theme park has issued a statement saying it is a rare and isolated incident, and their main priority is supporting the welfare of the handler.

An investigation will be carried out.

Lottery officials are calling on Wollongong locals and visitors to check their Lucky Lotteries Super Jackpot tickets after a mystery player scored $100,000 in this morning's draw but is yet to discover their win.

The mystery Illawarra player held the 1st Prize winning entry in Lucky Lotteries Super Jackpot draw 10871, drawn Monday 2 September 2024, and looks forward to a total prize of $100,000.

The $100,000 win comes after a Wollongong father scored $1 million in last Wednesday’s Weekday Windfall draw, making it the second major lottery win to land in the region in the last two weeks.

As the winning entry is not registered to a player card, officials from The Lott have no way of contacting the ticketholder and must wait for them to check their ticket and come forward.

The 1st Prize winning entry was purchased at Keira Street Newsagency.

ALL southbound lanes of the M1 Princes Motorway have reopened after a bushfire at Maddens Plains.

One southbound lane of the Motorway was closed between the Princes Highway and Appin Road.

Traffic has returned to normal through the area.

The M1 Princes Motorway has reopened to southbound traffic at Sublime Point following a bushfire at Maddens Plains.

One southbound lane remains closed on the motorway for urgent power line repairs.

All lanes of the Princes Highway have also reopened, after being closed in both directions between Appin Road and Sublime Point.
