Local drivers are being reminded a four-day double demerit period will come into force, from midnight [24/01], ahead of the Australia Day long weekend.

Police will be out in force, targeting speeding, drink and drug driving, seatbelt, and helmet offences.

Anyone caught using their mobile phone behind the wheel will be hit with a $410 fine and 10 points.

Double demerits will remain in place until the end of Monday [27/01].

All new buses installed with seatbelts will soon be fitted with technology to remind passengers to buckle up.

From November next year, 'fasten seatbelts' signs will be visible on the back of every seat and announcements will play over a loudspeaker when the bus starts to move, like on aeroplanes.

The federal government has announced the safety reforms in response to the devastating Hunter Valley Bus Tragedy, which tragically claimed the lives of 10 people.

A loophole that allowed some buses with seats less than one-metre high to forgo seatbelts will also be removed.

Security is being beefed-up in Washington DC, ahead of President Elect Donald Trump's inauguration tomorrow (Tuesday 21 January 2025).

In less than 24 hours, the 78-year-old will be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States.

Weather has forced the event to be moved inside, with big name acts Carrie Underwood, The Village People and Billy Ray Cyrus set to perform on the day and lead-up to the ceremony.

Demerit points have been scrubbed from the licences of well-behaved drivers in the Illawarra and South Coast.

More than 1.5M motorists in New South Wales were eligible for the demerit point reward scheme, but 500,000 did not meet the criteria, having re-offended on the state’s roads in the past 12 months.

Wollongong City Council says some beachgoers have been cling wrapping picnic shelters and huts along the foreshore to reserve them on busy days.

Rangers first noticed the cheeky tactic in December, prompting them to install signage in key locations to remind residents and visitors the act is prohibited, and penalties may apply.

The Prime Minister has visited the marginal seat of Gilmore on the South Coast this morning (Tuesday 14 January 2025) to announce $5M for the Nowra Riverfront Precinct.

The investment will allow Shoalhaven City Council to finalise the masterplan designs to transform the area into a thriving hub for locals and tourists to enjoy.

The activation plan has been in the works for years and would reconnect the Nowra CBD with the Shoalhaven waterfront, with accommodation, parklands, and transport links.

It comes after Anthony Albanese yesterday announced a re-elected Labor Government will spend $3B to expand the National Broadband Network, allowing thousands of locals to upgrade to a fibre-optic Internet connection.
