An outbreak of the UK strain of COVID-19 has just been announced by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. She suggested that a possible reason for the source of the outbreak was that the virus was transmitted to launders via international pilots’ uniforms. But can COVID-19 spread on clothes? If so what does this mean for us at home? Do we need to do anything special with out laundry to prevent the spread of COVID-19 via our clothes?

Researchers in Australia and Japan have teamed up to investigate if Alzheimer’s dementia can be detected by a simple blood test (Nakamura et al 2020). On a previous episode of The Creative Nurse Australia, we highlighted the science behind the development of Alzheimer’s dementia. In this video I showed how the formation of beta amyloid protein plaques interrupt the communication in the brain and thus create the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s dementia.
Currently, the only way of identifying this beta amyloid deposition in the brain—the earliest pathological signature of Alzheimer’s disease—are PET imaging or measurement of beta amyloid proteins in cerebrospinal fluid.
Scientists have recently discovered that these beta amyloid proteins can actually be found in the blood up to 30yrs before the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s occur. Therefore, not only can it show if someone has Alzheimer’s dementia but it can also determine if you are at risk 30yrs prior to symptoms. This is a great revelation that opens up so many doors for preventative measures.
