These long-lived reptiles are difficult to age with current methods including mark-recapture and skeletal examinations and excluding how much algae an individual is covered in, which is often a sign of poor health rather than age 🩺👵🏼

⚠️ ・・・ ☠️ Blenny! Você é venenoso?? As presas de um peixe são bastante estranhas, mas ainda mais estranho é como um grupo de dentes – blennies de presas – se defende dos atacantes. Um novo estudo mostra que seu veneno não causa dor quando testado em camundongos, ao contrário das picadas muitas vezes excruciantes de outros peixes venenosos. Em vez disso, o veneno do blenny faz com que a pressão sanguínea da vítima caia quase 40% por um curto período de tempo, o que na natureza pode desacelerar um predador em potencial (como o peixe garoupa) por tempo suficiente para o pequeno blenny escapar. Ainda mais interessante é como esse estranho veneno – que compartilha blocos de construção com o veneno de escorpiões e caracóis de cone – surgiu. Quando os cientistas construíram uma árvore genealógica de blenny usando DNA de 11 espécies, eles descobriram outra surpresa: ao contrário da maioria dos animais peçonhentos, que evoluem seu veneno antes de desenvolver ferramentas de injeção especializadas, os blennies de presas evoluíram suas agulhas antes de seu veneno, relatam os pesquisadores hoje na Current Biology. . Depois que eles desenvolveram seus caninos distintivos aumentados, um ramo desenvolveu glândulas de veneno e transformou esses dentes em ferramentas ranhuradas de entrega de veneno (acima). O resultado é possivelmente a única mordida venenosa no reino animal que evoluiu para defesa em vez de pegar uma refeição😬
