RIP Steve Albini. A great audio engineer more would know for his controversial recording of Nirvana's In Utero album (I love the tone and live feel on this album personally), he also worked with other legendary bands such as The Jesus Lizard, The Pixies, PJ Harvey, Veruca Salt, Neurosis, Mogwai, The Breeders & Hemet just to name a few. His noise rock / post-hardcore bands Big Black & Shellac also blew my mind, especially Big Black in the early eighties. I'm spinning Big Black all day today. I suggest you do the same.

On the 5th of April 1994 Kurt Cobain left the building (30 years ago). I remember hearing the news on the radio on that day while driving in my ute & remember the way it hit me. There were no mobile phones, facebook or Instagram but you could still feel the reverberation somehow. On the exact same day in 2002 (23 years ago) we lost Layne Staley, another huge influence on me. On the 5th of April 1966, Mike McCready was born. Mike & Layne were in the band Mad Season (formed in 1994) with Barrett Martin & Mark Lanegan & Alice in Chains also released Jar of Flies in 1994. Mike Starr (ex AIC bassist) was born on the 4th April 1994. Born in April myself & loving all the abovementioned artists, this time of year always seeds a melancholic feeling inside me & with all this rain around, it only seems fitting to be sitting next to my record player listening to all these amazing artists on vinyl loudly.

The legendary Andy Summers was born on this day in 1942. Andy's chorus heavy guitar playing was a signature of the power trios (The Police) sound, weird atmospheric chord pads & percussive guitar shronk. Emerging from the british new wave scene, The Police blended rock, reggae, punk & jazz into their hook-laden pop-punk that I fell in love with at an early age. Message in a Bottle & Roxanne were completely transformed by employing suspensions & dropping the third in chord progressions. Put some on your turntable now!

29 years old this week. COC are the Southern Sludge masters. This album is mired in a delicious molasses of distortion and muddy, groovy riffs. Deliverance is an album that leaves you feeling overwhelmed and satisfied at the same time. It's grimy, groovy sound made it an early favorite of mine and I strongly recommend you at least listen to this album once & it won't be enough!

32 Year old today. Hindsight is always 20/20, but Kyuss' promising debut album, 1991's Wretch, was somewhat ignored by media and public (not me). In my opinion, Brant Bjork was the standout here & when Blues for the Red Sun followed, everyone had a favorite new band. After all these years Kyuss are still in my top 10 bands of all time. Stoner Rock Rules!

Joe Strummer would of been 71 today. The Clash in my opinion were the best and most accomplished punk band and critically important provocateurs influenced by reggae, rockabilly, and blues.
