✨ Writer Spotlight! ✨

📚 Next up is Stephen Whiteside—an Australian writer and poet who has been extensively published with The School Magazine for decades. His poems have received awards from the Grenfell Henry Lawson competition; the Nimbin Poetry Competition; the Bronze Swagman Competition and Jackie Hosking's competition for rhyming poetry or verse stories for children.

✏️ Here’s Stephen’s advice for any emerging children’s writer, plus his thoughts on the value of The School Magazine for their writing career:

“It has been a joy and a privilege to write for NSW School Magazine over the past thirty years. Through a somewhat protracted process of trial and error, I discovered that my principal passion and talent was writing rhyming verse for children. It has been very satisfying to see so many of my poems beautifully illustrated by the magazine's stable of highly talented artists.

Being published in School Magazine has given me a strong sense of validation as a writer, and done wonders for my self-esteem. Furthermore, I am quite sure my collection of poems for children would never have been published by Walker Books if so many of the poems included in the book had not already been published in The School Magazine. Sure, there have been plenty of rejections along the way, but they just make the acceptances so much sweeter.

I would strongly recommend that any aspiring writers, especially poets, contribute to NSW School Magazine!"

✨ Writer Spotlight! Throughout the year we’re highlighting our amazing TSM family of regular writers! ✨

📚 Next up is Jackie Hosking—a Nigerian-born Cornish Australian children’s picture book writer and poet who’s poetry has been published many times with The School Magazine over the years. She has published four picture books, and one is forthcoming this year called ‘Woolly Tale’ by the National Museum of Australia. In 2019 she was awarded a May Gibbs Creative Time Fellowship.

✏️ Here’s Jackie’s advice for any emerging children’s writer, plus her thoughts on the value of The School Magazine for their writing career:

“I was first published by The School Magazine in March 2005 with a poem called, “If I Were a Giant” - the absolute thrill! As a pure novice that was the encouragement that I needed to keep going - my dream to one day have a ‘rhyming’ picture book of my own. Six picture books later (with 7 in the pipeline) I have never looked back. Every Australian publisher is familiar with this iconic publication and I believe, being published with The School Magazine, has shown them that I take my writing seriously.”

✨ Writer Spotlight! Throughout the year we’re highlighting our amazing TSM family of regular writers! ✨

📚 Next up is Janeen Brian— an award-winning children’s author and poet with over 100 books published in both trade and educational publishing. Many of her books have been translated and distributed worldwide while more than 200 stories, poems, plays and articles have been published in children’s magazines or anthologies. She was the recipient of the 2012 Adelaide Festival of Literature Carclew Fellowship and in 2009 also received a May Gibbs’ Children’s Literature Trust Fellowship. Her work has been published for decades at The School Magazine.

✏️ Here’s Janeen’s advice for any emerging children’s writer, plus her thoughts on the value of The School Magazine for their writing career:

“It was through The School Magazine that I first realised I could write poetry. I had two poems published in 1983 and haven’t stopped since. Over the years, stories, articles and plays followed by the dozens. Because I love writing for children and because I value the integrity of the magazine and the team behind it, that to have a piece of writing accepted is always a joy. As well, I also feel my writing has improved because of The School Magazine!”

Get ready for comic chaos and fun in 2025 with three brand new comic serials on the way!

The Ninja Star by Aśka 🦊🎸 follows Roxy, a fox from a ninja household (never be seen or heard!) who dreams of one day being a loud and flashy Rock Star.

Rattly Natalie by Tony Colley 🪐🤖 is about a girl and her pet blob stranded on the planet Mercury with some very broken robots.

Puss in Boots by Rosemary Fung 🐈🏰 is a cute and silly retelling of the classic fairytale with all of the same cleverness and trickery and a slightly more food-motivated cat.
