🐼 Panda Diplomacy 🐼

Chinese Premier Li Qiang's arrival in Australia on Saturday is the first by a Chinese leader since 2017, signalling a potential reset in bilateral relations. Both nations aim to resolve trade and consular issues lingering from the previous government. Under Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who took office in 2022, Australia has adopted a softer diplomatic approach towards China.

Premier Li also announced that pandas, Wang Wang and Fu Ni will return to China in November after 15 years at Adelaide Zoo. Despite not producing offspring, the zoo can select two new pandas as part of China's breeding and diplomacy program.

My latest work for The New York Times.

I recently sat in on a Prokick Australia session. Led by former AFL player Nathan Chapman, the Pro Kick academy converts AFL and rugby players into punters for the American football system.

Trainees at the academy go through a year of training on both on and off-field skills needed for the collegiate system before being exposed to recruiters in the pursuit of the dream of playing college football.

The tricky curves and crafty bounces of their kicks, honed by Australian football and rugby, have changed the way punt returners are coached.
