GET BEHIND HOMELESSNESS WEEK

In Australia, there are over 116,000 people experiencing homelessness on any given night. It’s a shocking statistic and one that many charities are working hard to resolve.

Homelessness Week, which launches today, aims to raise awareness of the impact of homelessness on Australia via national and local community events, including providing information on the importance of housing as a solution and educating communities on how they can make a difference.

Created by StreetSmart Australia, the CafeSmart initiative is a coffee-industry-led event that runs during Homelessness week, uniting hundreds of coffee roasters, cafes, and coffee lovers around the country to fundraise for their local homeless charities.

Over the past 11 years, the campaign has helped to raise and distribute over $1.6 million across more than 1,000 projects tackling homelessness.

Cafés, roasters, and lovers of coffee across Australia, will get the chance to support the cause by buying a cup of coffee at participating cafés with $1 being donated to the cause.

In addition to this, the big-hearted peeps at made by Fressko have created a co-branded CaféSmart coffee cup; and $5 from each sale will be donated to the cause.

“We have seen the CafeSmart movement grow here in Melbourne year on year and wanted to get involved, says Hayley Culley (Marketing Director, made by Fressko) “Our co-branded coffee cups are a way of us supporting the amazing work StreetSmart does for marginalised communities across Australia. We also offer our co-branded cups at a discounted wholesale price to cafe owners to further encourage donations.”

The Fressko Bino cup performs very well in the Caffeine Magazine Australia reusable review – which you can pick up in select specialty coffee cafés and roasters.

This stylish canary yellow version of both the 8oz Bino and 16oz Camino cup, bears the CaféSmart smiley logo. Order yours from the made by Fressko website.

ALLIES IN EQUALITY
The Australian Specialty Coffee Association () and the International Women’s Coffee Alliance () are collaborating to redress the balance of discrimination and exclusion in our industry. Ben Bicknell explains how, in our latest edition.

With an intention to focus on clear, open and inclusive communication, the initial steps of the alliance will see a dedicated identity and digital presence created and an open survey to better understand the priorities of the Australian coffee community.

Like many other industries, specialty coffee faces a range of challenges from rising costs of living and climate change, sustainability for producers and tightening margins at many points across the supply chain. Both ASCA and IWCAA believe that the participation, empowerment and celebration of all individuals within the specialty coffee community is critical to the ability to effectively meet these challenges.

It’s early days for this alliance, but with a clear need and committed support from these two national associations, it’ll be exciting to see what it can achieve.

To find out more or get involved, you can connect with ASCA or IWCAA via their social media channels. Read more in the latest issue of Caffeine Magazine Australia.

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!
We offered readers of Caffeine Australia and our social media followers the chance to win a NutraMilk Nut Processor worth $899, courtesy of Bombora Supplies.

Entries needed to identify which of three almond milk coffees was made using a NutraMilk processed almond milk – you’ll find the comp on our feed.

The response was fantastic and we thanks all of those who entered. But there can only be one winner and that was Veronique Power from Toronto, NSW.

Vernique has already got her prize and is very pleased with what it can do. “The taste is so yummy and creamy. I can already feel positive changes in my body,” she says. “Life does not get better by chance; it gets better by change. This machine has already changed my life!”

If you missed out then worry not, we have a new competition running to win a Sttoke reusable cup along with a four-pack of Mr Black Espresso cans and a box of Single O specialty coffee Parachutes (that’s drip bags to you and me!)

Oh yeah, the correct answer to the Nutramilk comp was ‘A’.

COFFEE WITH THE CROCODILES
Located in a beautiful old railway station and boasting breathtaking views over the Daintree, St Crispins Café is a hidden gem that has been run by Karen Jackson since mid-2019.

The railway was established in the late 1800s to transport sugar cane from the Mossman Sugar Mill, down to the Port Douglas Sugar Wharf.

Not than anybody needs an excuse to visit Port Douglas, but the fine-dining menu supported by expertly-brewed coffee from Locale Coffee Roasters makes for an irresistible combination. Chill out by their idyllic lagoon and say 'hello' to their resident crocodile.

VANILLA BY NAME BUT NOT BY NATURE
Vanilla Food is the brainchild of Nilla Tomkins who was a chef for 20 years. She then ran a café and catering business before creating this stunning light-filled space at Noosa Junction in Queensland.

Inspired by things in her everyday life the focus is on good food, health and the environment.

Clandestino Coffee provide the caffeine hit with an organic blend that fits perfectly with the relaxed vibe. Where better to grab a Saturday morning brekkie.

PERFECT BALANCE
Bakehouses are making a comeback and this new wave fascination for indulgent pastries can be perfectly matched with a specialty coffee.

We’re not talking about the stale brown pastry brick that’s been sitting in the display cabinet all week, we mean the sumptuous and flavoursome fancies that are being crafted by an increasing number of baking artisans.

In the latest issue of Caffeine Magazine Australia we explore the science and check out some of the countries better exponents of this delicate craft.

Ask your local specialty café or roaster to stock the magazine (if they don’t already) or subscribe online and get you own copy delivered to your door. (Link in description).

An assault on the senses
The weekend is looking a whole lot brighter with the arrival of this stunning triple pack of filtery goodness from our friends at FiveSenses coffee.

This is the fourth year of showcasing the ever-improving journey of Colombian coffee producer Leonid Ramirez.

As with many small farmers, the only way they can provide for their families is to sell their coffee at the best price. Leonid has worked hard to increase quality and efficiency while pumping out some exceptional-tasting coffee.

Presented as filter roasts in either washed, honey or naturally processed, there’s something for everyone.

Three bags, three different processes, one farmer. What could be better?

GET YOUR GROUCH ON
There’s nothing better that kicking back on a Sunday morning, with the sun in the sky and a new single origin coffee to experience.

In the this morning is San Marcos, a washed Catuai, Bourbon roasted by in Myaree, Western Australia.

It has been originally sourced from the Beneficio San Marcos co-operative in the Ocotepeque region of Honduras where the plants grow on the slopes of Mount Meredon – the tallest mountain in the country. The high altitude and rich volcanic soil makes some particularly fine beans.

Dark ripe fruits and nuts. Delish!

SHUT UP AND DRIVE
Here at Caffeine Magazine Australia we look to showcase some of the country’s more interesting coffee-drinking establishments.

Drive Cafe in Golden Point Victoria is one such café.

From the outside it looks like an old 1970s service station; on the inside it's an invitingly spacious and welcoming diner. This inspired family-run venture doesn't just offer great coffee – Dukes Coffee is their bean of choice – but also a range of locally sourced food and beverage options. Grabbing a coffee from the servo has never tasted so good.

WOMEN COFFEE GROWERS TO THE FORE
This super fruity naturally processed Yellow Bourbon has been sourced and roasted by in Melbourne.

Brazilian coffee farmer Grasiela Maris (pictured) is a founding member of the Flores em Ação (Flowers in Action) project that is supported by women, and focused on women to empower female coffee farmers in Brazil

The women are encouraged to produce, process and brand their very own coffee; showcasing their talent and directing any profits back to the women involved.

The natural process involves spreading out the freshly-harvested coffee cherries to dry in the sun. This allows the beans to absorb all the flavours from the flesh of the fruit.

23 Degrees’ decision to lightly roast the beans, enhances the fruity goodness. As their website explains: “We wanted to let the stunning fruit notes of juicy pineapple and creamy papaya of this natural processed coffee shine and have therefore opted for a lighter roast level.”

Roasted to be enjoyed as a filter, this is a tropically tasty drop with the added benefit that your coffee is supporting a worthy cause.
