Some people may find Laurie Matheson's grave inadequate. Others see it as a deep expression of sadness. The story behind the attractive grave figure is definitely heartbreaking.

Laurie Matheson was an Australian multimillionaire and art collector. In 1981, he bought the largest marble figure of an up-and-coming artist at an exhibition. The artist and his buyer started talking.

The artist Peter Schipperheyn told him that he would very much like to return to Italy to work on a large block of marble. Laurie Matheson financed this trip for him without hesitation.

In return, he wanted a large sculpture so he paid generously and upfront. Peter Schipperheyn took advantage of this trip to make enough sculptures for a second exhibition. In addition, he sold an expensive figure to Laurie Matheson, as agreed.

A few years later, Laurie Matheson died unexpectedly. Artist Peter Schipperheyn was then commissioned by his widow to make this figure for his tomb. Even if she wasn't the model, the figure was supposed to express her deep desire.

And that's it. The widow who always sleeps on her husband's grave. For a cemetery this unexpectedly intimate, almost erotic, but full of great and real human emotions.

I think this tombstone is absolutely successful.

Discovered in Russia in 1890, the Shigir Idol is one of the oldest known wooden sculptures, dating to approximately 12,000 years ago. It was found in a peat bog, which had preserved it.

The sculpture is 2.8 metres high, but its original height is thought to have been 5 metres or more. It was carved from a larch tree (approximately 159 years old at the time) using the jaw of a beaver and stone tools. On it are faces, hands, and zigzag lines. No one knows what it was used for, but some say it could have been a territorial or navigational marker, or perhaps it depicts forest spirits or had some ritual purpose. Some have suggested that it depicts a creation myth.

The sculpture might have been placed upright next to an ancient lake before it fell into the bog, thus preserving it for over 12,000 years.

According to Thomas Terberger, a scholar of prehistory at Gรถttingen University in Germany:

โ€œThe idol was carved during an era of great climate change, when early forests were spreading across a warmer late glacial to postglacial Eurasia. The landscape changed, and the artโ€”figurative designs and naturalistic animals painted in caves and carved in rockโ€”did, too, perhaps as a way to help people come to grips with the challenging environments they encountered.โ€

This sculpture was carved about ten thousand years before the city of London was founded and is over twice the age of Stonehenge. A truly ancient artifact.

It is currently on display in the Sverdlovsk Regional Museum of Local Lore in Russia.

These impressive portraits are by Dave 'Tex' Smith. I was lucky enough to meet the talented artist while in New Zealand a while back. I've been following his art since and he's done some very special portraits that bring out the soul of the subject - even when he's working from a photo.

Dave is a portrait artist and childrens book illustrator based in Taranaki New Zealand. He creates his portrait work based on family photos using a digital drawing board and professional artist software. The process is the same as the traditional process involving mediums like oil and pastels, but allows him to create high resolution work that can be sent anywhere in the world at an affordable price. ๐Ÿ‘Œ

She was a little horse.
