Somerset region calls the community to be alert and remain
safe
Rainfall is continuing to fall in the region, with the Bureau of Meteorology suggesting
heavy showers will continue tonight and tomorrow.
Mayor Graeme Lehmann has urged residents to remain in a safe place and to avoid
attempting to drive in the current conditions.
“We have a number of bridges inundated and many roads closed across Somerset
due to flooding, with our neighbouring regions in very similar positions. This is
absolutely not the time to get in a car and go anywhere. It’s far too dangerous.”
Mayor Lehmann said a Local Disaster Coordination Centre (LDCC) was activated on
Friday, with a control centre based in Esk, and an emergency alert released as
follows:
“Emergency Emergency. Flood Warning from Somerset Local Disaster Management
Group. The areas of Lockyer Creek within the Somerset Regional Council area are at
risk over the next several hours. If you were impacted by flooding in 2011 or 2013 or
are in a low lying area near the Lockyer Creek you should seek shelter to higher
ground now. Listen to local radio or visit http://disaster.somerset.qld.gov.au/. Warn
your neighbours and head to higher ground now. If its flooded, forget it. For life
threatening emergencies call 000.”
“There are refuge centres open in four locations and people needing urgent
assistance can call the LDCC control centre on 5424 4000. The team at the control
centre is doing all they can to ensure information gets out to the public as soon as
possible,” Mayor Lehmann said.
Places of refuge have been established at:
• Memorial Hall, 18 Kennedy Street, Kilcoy
• Somerset Civic Centre, 35 Esk Hampton Road, Esk
• Fernvale Futures Complex, Brisbane Valley Highway, Fernvale
• Alexandra Hall, 111 Cressbrook Street, Toogoolawah
Many roads in the region have been cut, with all known impacted roads listed on
Council’s Disaster Management Dashboard at http://disaster.somerset.qld.gov.au/
If you need assistance, the LDCC control centre in Esk can be contacted by phone
on 5424 4000.

FYIStay safe.
