Could a career in Technology, be a game changer for you?

Australia’s technology sector needs so many more skilled workers that supply cannot currently keep up with the pace of demand.

The Future Skills Organisation’s Technology Workforce Plan reveals, that more than 25,000 workers are required in the next five years to work directly in the technology industry.

“VET has been an absolute game changer for me because it’s kickstarted my career. I now have a stable job in a career I want to be in, doing all the work that I want to be doing and absolutely loving it. I was 15 when I started and I was hired by my employer at 16 years old - that doesn’t normally happen.” - Kai Baharthah-King, 2023 Western Australia Vocational Student of the Year.

As technologies are rapidly evolving, a worker’s skills can quickly become outdated if they do not have work experience. Traineeships, such as those offered by group training organisation MEGT, can help students combine work with their vocational study.

“The theme this year is game changer, and that’s what it means. It’s a game changer for people’s lives to get the skills that we can teach them,” NSW Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education Hon. Steve Whan MP states as he launched National Skills Week for NSW last Wednesday.

National Skills Week Chair, Brian Wexham says “National Skills Week continues to be a catalyst for those seeking careers as tradespeople. It’s no longer a matter of recruiting people of the right gender, it’s about recruiting people with the right skills and there are numerous success stories demonstrating women have those skills.”

Bridie Searle from Newcastle is one of those women. Before her traineeship, the NSW Trainee of the Year 2023, had never been on a ship. Today she manages million-dollar maritime projects with Thales Australia Limited in the Above Water Systems business. This was all achieved after securing a traineeship, where she began a Certificate IV in Project Management Practice.
