2014 Custom Toy Hauler / Offroad Hybrid Camper, Sleeps 5

“The Box” as it was affectionately known is the ultimate hybrid. At just over 2m wide and only 6m long it tucks in behind your 4WD perfectly allowing you to access areas other wider campers just cannot get. The drawer bar length allows it to be jack-knifed as well allowing it to be turned around on the tightest of tracks.

This camper has been built to take on whatever Australia could throw at it. Everything was built with simplicity and reliability in mind.

Originally a toy hauler when we purchase it, we modified it to be a hybrid camper, but the design was done with the ability to reconfigure things and the internals be converted back into a toy hauler.

The body itself is full aluminium construction. The floor uses the same extrusion as a ute tray. Walls are fully welded RHS with composite panels on the wall. Insulation has been installed to improve comfort. The entire box has been wrapped black but is originally white above the chequer plate .

The chassis was custom built by Felk to provide additional ground clearance. It incorporates brush bars to protect the body panels.
We also had a rear recovery point installed.

Underneath it has custom Lovells leaf springs on a solid single axle, with a spare spring positioned up around the chassis. Shock absorbers are installed to dampen the corrugations. Offroad electric brakes are also installed.
CSA camper rims are wrapped in MT ATZ P3 tyres. The camper will also come with another set of black alloys which were originally on it.

An 80L water tank is positioned directly above the axle and protected by a bash plate. This was done to keep the centre of gravity down low for when Offroad.

The spare is positioned at the front of the underbody, using a Toyota spare tyre lifter to keep it in place.

On the front of the drawer bar DO35 hitch and an XO jockey wheel. A massive storage box is mounted behind the gas bottle which house a fridge slide on one side, and all the electrical components. Even with a fridge, camp chairs for 5 you can still fit a 2kVA generator inside and safely locked away.

Electrical is taken care of by a full Enerdrive power system.
200Ah of lithium, 40A DC2DC charger, a 240V 50A charger and a 2000W inverter. This is all wired through a Simarine system (install not complete - touch screen never installed - will come with trailer).
240V and 12Vdc are wired to the kitchen area and as well as inside the living area.

Outside is all your cooking and kitchen storage needs.
There is the hatch which holds the cooktop (included) and heaps of room for pots and pan storage. The area is also accessible from within the camper.

Beside the cooker is the main kitchen area.
Featuring a slide out serving bench with multiple shelves complete with a roll down screen to keep everything in place whilst on the rough road. Lighting is installed in the kitchen door and above the cooler.
A 4m Fiama awning covers the entire area creating a great dining area.

Around off the fold down tail gate is an outdoor toilet/ shower tent with a roof.

Moving inside the living area is set out to sleep 5. Up front are 2 full single sized bunks. Underneath the bunks are custom made Drifta storage drawer unit.
Across from the bunks is a full sized queen bed with another custom Drifta drawer unit.

The 5th bed is positioned above the queen bed.
With all the canvas windows open this is the best bed in the camper.

To get additional head room the roof tilts up and is then enclosed with gray canvas. When the tail gate is dropped, there is a full canvas section that can be installed to maximise the views.

The timber wall feature houses the window which has both a block out shade and midgie mesh screen.

Additional storage is accessed with the tailgate down. A huge space for storage boxes is under the main bed, as well as a hatch to access under the kitchen for the storage of bulk foods.

You will not find a hybrid camper which has been built to tackle the toughest terrain that maintains this much comfort and internal storage.

Now for the bad.

The box has been used. There are some marks and scratches, but nothing crazy.

The wrap is definitely overdue to be redone, and as such we have taken $$ off the asking price so the new owner can do this when they are ready.

The wrap is basically off the roof and is starting to come off the nose cone areas. The roof is also due to have the sikaflex re done.

The door seal (rubber) require replacing, I just haven’t got around to doing it.

And, some of the hinges are showing signs of surface rust - only a cosmetic thing but worth noting.

It will be really hard to see “The Box” go. We have travelled all over Australia with our 3 kids and created some incredible memories, but with now teenagers and travel plans changing we have upgraded to a bigger toy hauler.

$28,500

Inspections are welcome.

Although a classic colour that the Haines Hunter’s and boats of that era are known for, the yellow just didn’t do it for me.
And with enough changes being made to no longer call it an original restoration, I made the call to flip it and re-gel coat the bottom of the hull.
We did look at just painting it with 2 Pac but with plans to be pulling it up on the sand islands with the fam during summer we reckon this will wear better 👍
