OTHER magazine โ€” there are other ways of seeing the world.

PEOPLE + ART + PHOTOGRAPHY + MUSIC + BOOKS + FILM + PLACES + SPIRITUALITY

OTHER magazine is an international bi-annual aimed at people who find a fascination in exploring the unfamiliar other. We are interested in those with an unusual or unique and creative pursuit, particularly those with a spiritual or occult quest. The human condition is capable of encompassing the most diverse, broad-range,

and disparate scope of experiences imaginable. We will feature the expression of these experiences through interviews, short biographies, reviews, and voices from the arts, nature based spirituality, and people deemed interesting. In keeping with our name, we feature works that are curious, smart, satirical, informative, interesting, investigative, and serious; in short, anything that is concerned with the expression of the unfamiliar "other". We will explore this vision through photography, film, graphic design, music, literature, culture, and performance arts.

The black Shawl of Hekate. A very special new design of magic garment by Logos373. Based on the ancient symbology of the goddess, we created an elegant shawl embroidered on the back with her sacred emblem, the Triple Key. For She is the "Key-Holderโ€ of the gates to Hades and of the entire cosmos.

Participating in Shinto ritual is a simple act that can be undertaken by any sincere visitor to local shrines. Today, as I wandered through the serene grounds of Meiji Jingu (shrine), one of Tokyo's most revered Shinto shrines, I was struck by the profound simplicity and depth of the rituals performed by its visitors. These rituals, though seemingly straightforward, are imbued with deep meaning, connecting the lives of ordinary people with something transcendent.

Upon entering, visitors engage in a cleansing ritual, washing hands and mouth at the temizuya. This act is not just about physical cleanliness; it symbolizes purification of the heart and mind, preparing oneself to enter a sacred space.

The burning incense, with its soothing aroma, is believed to clear the head and dispel negative energies, creating an ambiance of peace and spirituality. The offering of a coin, a small yet significant gesture, is an expression of gratitude and respect to the kami, the Shinto deities.

The ritual of bowing and clapping after the coin offering is particularly fascinating. It's a way of calling the attention of the kami, showing reverence, and making a silent prayer or wish.

At Meiji Jingu, visitors can also engage in a unique form of divination. Shaking a box of omikuji (fortune sticks) and drawing one, they receive an oracle โ€“ a written fortune that offers guidance, insights, or predictions about their future.

Beyond these, visitors write their prayers, hopes, and wishes, enclosing them in an envelope with a coin, and placing them in an offering box. This act symbolizes the direct transmission of one's deepest desires to the divine.

The perimeter of the shrine is lined with amulets for sale, each designed for specific requests โ€“ be it health, success in career, or finding love. These amulets represent the human desire to seek divine help in the many facets of life.

In the heart of bustling Tokyo, the rituals of Meiji Jingu offer a moment of connection to the divine, grounding us in tradition and spirituality. They remind us that in our fast-paced, often chaotic lives, there's a profound beauty in pausing, reflecting, and engaging in acts that bridge the mundane and the sacred.

As a travel reporter exploring the bustling streets of Tokyo, I've stumbled upon a captivating aspect of the city that often goes unnoticed by many tourists: the quaint and mystical street corner shrines.

Tucked away in the nooks of this neon-lit metropolis, these shrines are a testament to Tokyo's deep-rooted spirituality and its seamless blend with modern life. Each shrine, though small in size, is an oasis of tranquility amidst the urban chaos. They range from Shinto to Buddhist traditions, showcasing a rich tapestry of religious beliefs and practices.

One can't help but admire the meticulous care with which these sacred spaces are maintained. Adorned with vibrant flowers, traditional offerings, and flickering candles, they are not just spiritual landmarks but also a reflection of the community's devotion and respect for the divine.

These shrines are more than just religious sites; they serve as cultural touchstones, connecting the bustling present of Tokyo with its serene, spiritual past. As you wander through the city, take a moment to pause at these shrines. You might just find a moment of peace and perhaps, a deeper connection with the heart and soul of Tokyo.

The Tomioka Hachiman Shrine in Tokyo is renowned for their Antique Fair. As a seeker of the mystical and the historical, I found myself amidst a treasure trove of antiquities.

Stalls are full with antique artifacts, from delicate porcelain to hand-painted scrolls. Each piece, seems to be a fragment of history where the spirits of the past mingled with ordinary people.

We met a stall-holder who had been a nurse in Sydney three years ago. She gave us a couple of tips on negotiating a price on a couple of beautiful black velvet coats from a neighbouring stall-holder.

Inside the main shrine, I could hear a rolling series of rituals being conducted with the heavy temple drums. I couldn't help but feel a profound connection to these universal ritual practices and the threads that connect us to the ancestors and the spirits of the land.

Blessed greetings, kindred spirits and seekers! As the sun pasted its zenith, let's adorn our altars with the enchanting beauty of summer's blooms. Marigolds, hyacinths, and even the mysterious belladonna each hold profound magical energies that resonate with this vibrant season.

๐ŸŒผ Marigolds for Protection and Psychic Vision: These golden blooms are not just a splash of color; they're guardians against negative energies. Placing marigolds on your altar can protect your sacred space and enhance psychic vision, connecting us deeper with the spiritual realm.

๐Ÿ’œ Hyacinths for Happiness and Overcoming Grief: Hyacinths, with their sweet fragrance, are a balm for the soul. They can be used in rituals to promote happiness, peace, and to aid in overcoming grief, connecting us with the soothing aspects of the Goddess.

๐ŸŒ‘ Belladonna for Transformation and Unlocking Secrets: Though belladonna must be handled with care due to its poisonous nature, it symbolizes the deeper mysteries of our craft. Use it symbolically to represent transformation, the unlocking of hidden knowledge, and the exploration of the shadow self.

Incorporating these powerful plants as magickal allies, onto our altars not only provides the visual beauty of the season but also aligns us with the energies they embody. Each flower and herb has its unique magick, enhancing our rituals and deepening our connection to the Earth and her cycles.

Blessed be on your magical journey! ๐ŸŒฟโœจ

As a Westerner embarking on a pilgrimage to Japan's revered sites, the journey to Hagiwara Rintokyodo Cemetery and the foothills of Mt. Fuji is a profound exploration of spirituality and serenity. Nestled within a landscape that bridges the earthly and the divine, this pilgrimage is a testament to the harmonious coexistence of nature and spirituality, so deeply ingrained in Japanese culture.

We set of from Gotemba station on foot walk to Hagiwara Rintokyodo Cemetery. This is less a physical trek and more a passage through time and tradition. The cemetery is ringed by huge pines trees. As you meander along patheays thereโ€™s a palpable sense of stepping into a realm where ancestors are revered and memories are enshrined. The cemetery, with its meticulously cared-for graves and tranquil ambiance, offers a unique perspective on how the Japanese honor and maintain connections with their past.

Continuing the journey towards the foothills of Mt. Fuji, the landscape unfolds in a tapestry of awe-inspiring beauty. The power and shear size of the mountain is majestic. This volcanic mountain hold the sense of a sleeping giant, an ethereal presence that has long captured the hearts and imaginations of poets, artists, and spiritual seekers. Even though we got close to this snow capped mountain we were still over two hours away from its physical summit.

For a Western pilgrim, this journey is an enlightening immersion into a world where nature is not just a backdrop, but a central character in a narrative of spiritual and cultural richness of Japan. The presence of Mt. Fuji, towering in the distance, is a constant reminder of the impermanence and beauty of life, resonating deeply with the teachings of Buddhism and Shintoism that permeate the Japanese way of life.

The experience of walking to Hagiwara Rintokyodo Cemetery and the foothills of Mt. Fuji is not simply a tourist activity; it's a journey of introspection and cultural discovery. It challenges the Western visitor to look beyond the surface and engage with the deeper, spiritual aspects of life, encouraging a respectful understanding of a culture that finds profound meaning in the harmony of the natural and the spiritual.

๐ŸŒธ Invoking the Kami in Japan ๐ŸŒธ

Did you know that in Shinto, Japan's indigenous spirituality, the Kami are revered as sacred spirits that inhabit all aspects of nature? Invoking the Kami is a profound practice steeped in tradition and reverence.

I just spent a pleasant couple of hours in the shop Iwakura (Power of Stone) and picked up a few ritual items.

Their Iwakura store is in Kichijลji, Musashino, Tokyo, Japan.

๐Ÿƒ Rituals often begin with purification, using water at a temizuya (shrine basin) to cleanse the hands and mouth. This act symbolizes the purification of the heart and mind.

๐ŸŒ… At the shrine, practitioners engage in deep, respectful bows and claps (nihai ni hakushu), a gesture to summon and show reverence to the Kami. The harmonious sound of clapping is believed to bridge the human and the divine.

๐Ÿ“œ Offerings play a key role. Shinsen, like sake, rice, and salt, are common, symbolizing sustenance and purity. These offerings are meticulously prepared and presented with the utmost respect.

๐Ÿ”” The use of Kagura, sacred Shinto music and dance, invites the Kami with rhythmic and spiritual harmony. The sounds of the Kagura bells and drums resonate, believed to please and attract the Kami.

Each step of these rituals embodies a deep connection with nature and the spiritual world, a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of Japan. Have you ever experienced or witnessed such rituals? Share your thoughts!

๐Ÿ’” DO YOU KNOW ๐Ÿ’”

Do you know what it is
To travel across epochs
Without memories?

To celebrate all that could be
Among the ruins of what was?

To march in exile
Carrying maps that become myths?

To never again see the sea
Where your children played in the sand?

Do you know what it is
To be forced
To create a new past?

To scream into the wind
without a voice?

To cross the sea of identity
Without a guide?

To watch fruit trees you have planted
Burn without your choice?

Invisible Friends
The โ€˜spirit drawingsโ€™ by a 19th-century British woman that rewrite art history.
Georgiana Houghton

Invisible Friends is a free exhibition currently running until early March. Recently โ€˜rediscoveredโ€™ by art history, Houghtonโ€™s outwardly abstract artworks โ€“ among the most astonishing images of her time โ€“ have now assured her place as one of the most radical of spiritualist artists and a precursor of the abstraction to come.

Houghton was a prominent figure of the early spiritualist movement in Victorian England, which played a significant role in 19th-century culture. Spiritualism is a belief system that centres around communication with the spirits of the dead, often through people known as mediums.

A trained artist, Houghton was also a medium. When painting, she sought to express the connection between the visible world and the invisible spirit realm, considering the โ€˜manifestation first, and art secondโ€™. With her hand guided by those she called her โ€˜invisible friendsโ€™โ€”long-dead artists, family, friends and angelsโ€”she created intricate, swirling, mesmeric images, only a few of which survive today.

Ancient Landmass Emerged and Disappeared 70,000 Years Ago
New archaeological research reveals that the sea off northwestern Australia once had islands and a massive landmass. This area was so large it could support around half a million people, as reported in a study published in Quaternary Science Review.

The summer solstice is almost here for us in the Southern Hemisphere. For the longest day of the year, it's a time imbued with deep esoteric and cosmic significance. The Sun, as divine will and purpose, enters into the sign of Capricorn, the symbol of ambition and manifestation. This celestial alignment invites introspection and alignment of our inner desires with the universe's rhythms just before the start of a new year.

The Sun's journey into Capricorn is a time to reflect on our soul's journey, to reassess our goals, and renew our sense of direction and purpose.

This period also coincides with the annual festive celebrations. It highlights a union of spiritual and material aspects of life and reminds us that the physical world is essential to our spiritual journey.

For witches and other occult practitioners, the solstice is a powerful time for rituals and magick. I see it also as a time to pause and think about ambitions for the coming year. It's an opportune moment to harness the Sun's power, infuse our intentions with energy, and think about boldly embracing the new year.
