RETRO GAMING: PLAYING the ARCADE GAMES of the SOVIET UNION ☭

In this video, Comrade George and I visit the Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines in Saint-Petersburg.

While western teens in the 70’s and '80s were obsessing over Pac-Man and Donkey Kong, their Soviet counterparts were playing arcade games meant to prepare them for war. At the time, video games weren't easily accessible in the Soviet Union. So the government fashioned them from refrigerators and calculators with the goal of training young Soviets for combat.

The Museum has about 40 authentic soviet arcade machines which were released in 1970's-90's.

EMBRACING RUSSIAN CULTURE: Exploring the Maslenitsa Festival in Saint-Petersburg, Russia 🇷🇺

In this video, I visited the last day of the traditional Maslenitsa festivities, also known as Pancake Week, which is traditionally celebrated in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine to mark the end of winter.

It originated as the pagan New Year celebration welcoming the arrival of spring, bringing together families, commemorating the dead, and eating pancakes!

Celebrations feature the baking of traditional pancakes, sleigh rides, sparring between groups of men and, finally, the burning of an effigy of Lady Maslenitsa.

Shrovetide precedes the beginning of Lent, with each day of the week holding its own meaning. Shrove Sunday, also known as the Sunday of Forgiveness, is a day for asking forgiveness for the harm caused to other people intentionally or unintentionally.
