Clear Music is a specialist supplier of printed music to the classical performing community. Come join us for a coffee! What do we provide? Clear Music supplies orchestras, choirs, conductors, music libraries and performers with printed music. We are currently dealing with over 400 publishers worldwide including Bärenreiter, Breitkopf & Härtel, Henle, Schott, Universal Edition, Carus-Verlag, Dobli

nger, Boosey & Hawkes, Ricordi, OUP and many more. We also offer a completely free reference and information service. We can research all the various printed music options available and give advice on the editions specific to your needs. Offering expert knowledge, attention to detail and decades of experience, our approach embodies a genuine caring and respect for the professional music community, and a close association with the publishers we represent. What are our areas of specialisation? Specialising in instrumental, choral, orchestral, and chamber music repertoire, we supply mainly to orchestras, libraries, conductors, major performing groups and professional musicians. We also specialise in searching for hard-to-find repertoire, and in many cases we are able to organise with publishers to obtain special reprints of archive/out of print titles. How does it work? An orchestra/librarian/conductor etc. will send us a list of the works they wish to perform. We will then perform a complete analysis and breakdown of the various options available, including information about the quality of various editions, prices, whether the work is available on sale or hire and answer any other questions you may have. We will then source the material direct from the publishers overseas and have it delivered here by air courier, with almost all freight charges absorbed by us! What is our pricing policy? Where we are dealing direct with overseas publishers, we aim to offer as close as possible to the overseas price. This makes ordering music through us speedy and highly appealing! You can contact us 7 days a week: [email protected] or call us on (02) 9029 5812.

Attention, conductors and Shostakovich fans! Last year, publishers Boosey & Hawkes and Sikorski announced the launch of the newly revised editions of all Shostakovich Symphonies. The full scores are released as large format study scores, with the majority already available, and the entire collection set to be completed in 2025, marking the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich’s death. From Symphony No. 1 (the 18-year-old’s “final work of his studies” at the St. Petersburg Conservatory) to his swan song, Symphony No. 15, full of references to past eras and spanning vast emotional states, this epic collection documents the composer’s life, and his explorations of various modern musical styles. More information can be found on the Boosey & Hawkes website.

There’s a fascinating story behind Bärenreiter-Verlag’s new edition of Ravel’s justly popular G-major piano concerto (the one for two hands!), which through careful research aims to get as close as possible to what Ravel envisaged.

Here’s more from the publisher: “A variety of sources were consulted for this new edition. The first print of the score, parts and piano reduction as well as a set of proofs used by pianist Marguerite Long to rehearse the work for the premiere served as the main sources. Ravel’s autograph, which was used as the engraver’s copy for the first print, must be considered a secondary source as Ravel later authorised changes during the proofreading process.”

Following from our previous post, here is another new Beethovenian release from Bärenreiter-Verlag - the complete collection of his charming Bagatelles, which includes the famous Für Elise. Simply email us your order at [email protected].

According to Bärenreiter:
"This edition brings together all of Beethoven's pieces that he himself associated with the term 'bagatelle', a trifle. The Bagatelles reflect Beethoven's diverse compositional cosmos in miniature and span almost his entire oeuvre from 1801/02 to 1824/25. In terms of playing technique, they range from moderate dexterity to demanding virtuosity."

What was Beethoven’s Op. 1? Answer: The delightful set of piano trios (available from Clear Music), famous for its combination of Haydnesque classicism and wit, and Beethoven’s already emerging unique musical language, full of energy, innovation and beauty. To order, simply email us at [email protected].

But here’s an interesting story behind the Op. 1 – from Bärenreiter-Verlag:

“Artaria had already published variations on a Mozart aria by Beethoven in 1793 under the highly symbolic opus number 1. However, the composer was not satisfied with this work and ensured that the opus number was transferred to another group of works which appeared in 1795, the three Piano Trios Op.1. His hope that these compositions would be worthy of his 'opus 1' and would make quite some impression was to be fulfilled.”
