Dolphins are tiny in the scale of things - happy hump day 🐬💙🐋

The song of a humpback whale is more than sound — it’s a living story beneath the waves.
Each melody is learned, shared, and transformed from generation to generation.
Listening to them feels like hearing the ocean breathe.

But these voices are fragile.
Noise pollution, habitat loss, and human impact threaten a tradition that has echoed through the oceans for thousands of years.
Protecting them means protecting one of the most extraordinary forms of communication on our planet.

Of all the wild things in Alaska, humpback whales are the ones that seem to make time stop ✨

That deep breath. The slow roll. The tail like a goodbye.
And you’re reminded that the world is bigger than your worries 🐋

Most people don’t think of birds as underwater swimmers, but we actually have multiple deep diving seabirds right here in San Diego!

In this clip you’ll see the little Shearwater on the surface dive towards the whale!

It did this because this massive momma humpback had a mouthful of fish, and the clever bird knows that a few stragglers are bound to escape the whale’s baleen...right into the beak of the bird!

Which one is your favourite? 1-3?

This encounter was the result of our patience and mutual respect for one another’s space and existence. Our boat dropped us some distance from the two, and I waited patiently on the surface as the mother and her calf approached me. I dove in parallel with their direction and opened my arms and showed my belly.

The mother seemed to understand that I meant no harm to her calf. She allowed her curious young to swim closer to me, a gesture that filled my heart with wonder. The calf swam with an innocent curiosity and spinned around to get a closer look at me from one eye to the other.

The humpbacks have demonstrated an intelligence and empathy that I had only heard of in stories, and I reciprocated by maintaining a respectful distance to let them be as undisturbed as much as possible.

I can now say that humpback whales are my most favourite animal. 😍💯🥹

Nothing takes your breath away quite like the way a full breach from a humpback whale does. It’s a sight I’ve been treated to many times over the years, but the excitement will never fade for me. The chances are low that you’ll see a breach like this on your first, second, or even twentieth whale watch… but it’s worth every second of patience and effort, I promise.

I never expected to see such ocean giants in British waters...and yet, on this unforgettable day, we spent hours observing multiple sei whales feeding off the coast of Cornwall.
Common dolphins rode alongside them, ducking away at the last minute as the enormous fin whales gaped their jaws open wide to feed. I have since learnt that whales prefer to lean to their left when engulf feeding...something borne out in the pictures of the behaviour. The sei whales were calm in our presence and we stayed with them for over 3 hours, when we left they were still feeding close by.

Whale sightings have been on the rise around the British coast. Is this a sign of a growing population? No one knows for sure so far...but I have made a promise to myself to embrace and pursue the beauty of my home waters. The wildest and most exhilarating ocean moments are not strictly the preserve of faraway seas, we have incredible marine life right here.
