T137A Jack breaching close to shore! He’s one of the largest orcas in the Pacific Northwest and is absolutely stunning.Scared or confused by his display, some inexperienced seal pups head to the water, right into harm’s way - perhaps an intentional move by Jack to take advantage of their inexperience and secure himself an easy meal.Credit by focusing on research, habitat protection, prey management, noise reduction, and education— the conservation community is striving to create a sustainable future for orcas and preserve these magnificent creatures for generations to come 🖤🤍

Adrenaline pumping, the surfer drops into the wave, the spray flying. And then, out of the depths, a massive humpback whale breaches the surface, joining the surfer in a display of raw power and grace. This incredible scene unfolded in Byron Bay, a place where nature constantly surprises and inspires. The energy is palpable, the moment unforgettable. Have you ever witnessed anything like this? “There are some breath-hold dives where the experience is so mesmerizing I completely forget about the burning sensation in my lungs.

This was one of those occasions.

As the whale song of a distant male reverberated through my body, this devoted mother humpback basked in the warm waters off the coast of Tonga – patiently waiting for her baby to grow, and building strength for the long journey back to their feeding grounds in Antarctica. I bid a silent farewell before gently floating to the surface so as not to disturb them.”

Video was taken on assignment for in Tonga under Special Interaction Permit (Regulation 13) from the Ministry of Tonga.

What happens when a whale dies?

Dying is also the law of life. When one of these giants of the ocean loses its life, its body serves as food for countless creatures. In Peninsula Valdés, the first to take advantage of the remains of this Right Whale are the petrels that smell the co**se from miles away and devour everything as quickly as they can. In a few days there will be no more trace of this whale, but an entire ecosystem will benefit from its energy. Where some see death, others find life. ✨ The endless cycle. Beneath the waves, a silent giant glides through the ethereal blue. Its massive form, shrouded in a veil of mist, evokes the image of a stealthy submarine. Its gentle undulations send ripples through the water, disturbing the schools of fish that dart about. A moment of serene majesty in the depths of the ocean.

There has been a lot of whales up in Portsmouth, NH and even a couple inside the Piscataqua river mouth. Watch out for the big pogie schools. Whales can’t see through them, and it can lead to this. These guys were simply fishing when this happened. Everyone was ok.

I remember jumping into the water for this moment, not really knowing if we were going to see them!

We were a bit far and had to swim for a while. Once we got closer, we spotted two whales still in the distance. Out of nowhere, they turned toward us—but they weren’t alone. They were cruising with a pod of rough-toothed dolphins too ✨

We all just stayed still, watching the magic unfold…

As they got super close, the dolphins started swimming all around us, and then one of the whales, slowly, and seemingly out of nowhere, opened its pectoral fin, showing us its big white belly… definitely felt like a big helloooooo ✨

Once they passed, I thought they were on their way. But then, they turned around again, this time from a bit further away. The conditions that day where crazy 🌧️ but luckily it opened up for that moment and the light was hitting so beautifully, creating a scene that looked like a painting—two stunning humpbacks and dolphins moving together.

It felt like they had been cruising all day, hanging out, turning, and dancing 🫶🏼
One can only wonder what they were communicating to each other…or to us ✨

I’ll never take for granted how lucky we are to have such experiences in the water with these special beings 🐋

If you don’t believe in sea monsters, you just might after a close encounter with one (or three) of these animals.

Fin whales are the second largest species on the planet, growing up to 85 feet in length and over 80 tons. But in spite of their size and alien appearance, they should really only be considered monsters if you happened to be a krill or small fish.

The whales lunge feed, expanding their pleated mouths to take in thousands of gallons of water, engulfing masses of their tiny prey that the orcas corral during their hunt. The resulting body looks more similar to a tadpole that never stopped growing than a whale as you know it. These opportunists exit the scene as quickly as they appeared, taking their haul and fading through the shimmering scales into the black waters below.

Two visions, of this incredible bird’s eye perspective I photographed with ‘Patchy’ as my subject - six months apart.

Image one - edited 14 January 2025.
Image two - edited 28 June 2024.

I sighted this iconic East-Australian humpback whale on June 16th. His eye-catching patched markings gave me the inspiration to dub him: Patchy.

The juvenile bull whale once endured a severe skin condition but has since recovered. Patchy’s healing process has since distinguished him from any other humpback whale on planet Earth!!

the first animal encounter to every leave me completely awestruck. swimming with blue whales is unlike anything I’ve ever done before. I’ve been brought to tears by whale encounters before (like, a lot…an unnecessary amount for someone who literally does this for a living) but seeing a blue whale for the first time in real life left me speechless. they are simply MASSIVE. the blue whales we find on board with are Pygmy’s, which means they ‘only’ reach up to 25m in length, but it still feels like they take about ten years to swim by you as more and more of their bodies come into view. predicting their trajectory well enough to get in for a good sighting is a real challenge, but when it works out it feels like magic.

also just incase the beauty of nature wasn’t enough for you, I added in a photo of a blue whale doing a big poo for your enjoyment.

Humpback whales are famous for their intricate, complex songs that can span hundreds of miles across the ocean. Interestingly, it's mainly male humpbacks that produce these elaborate vocalizations, while mothers and their calves engage in more subtle communication through soft whispers. What do you feel when listening to the hypnotic sounds of humpback whales?📽️ x

Swipe through// The beauty of the movements of humpback whales is unparalleled in the underwater world (maybe the manta rays have equally beautiful movements). But the size of humpbacks make it an astonishing display of power and grace.

Capturing it in a photo is always tricky but I try my best to convey the feeling that watching this provides.

It’s one of my favorite times of year to be around these animals and take some time away from the real world and let the ocean and its beings do its thing.

Hope you enjoyed these frames…
