CRA is paying tribute to a legend of radio, Bob Rogers, after his death at the age of 97.

“Bob Rogers’ extraordinary radio career spanned 78 years – a remarkable feat and a testament to his talent, dedication, and character,” said Jo Dick, CRA chief commercial officer.

“Bob was the true definition of a radio star – working at some of the biggest commercial stations in Australia, he did everything from music, Top 40, talkback, entertainment, and racing.

“Bob joined Sydney radio station 2CH in 1995 and was on-air until he retired at the age of 93 in 2020 – an incredible achievement.

“We remain in awe of his extraordinary contribution to Australian commercial radio. He leaves a unique legacy, which lives on in the memories and hearts of his listeners, peers and colleagues.”

The first ratings of 2024 have shown 82% of Australians – a record 12.26 million people – are listening to commercial radio, while GfK Radio Survey 1 also showed promising growth in younger audiences.

Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA) welcomed the results, which showed commercial radio’s total audience grew by 72 thousand, or 0.6%, while there was a 1.3% jump in the number of listeners aged 10-24 to 2.8 million.

“We are really encouraged by the first survey results for 2024, which show commercial radio continues to grow its audience and bring in younger listeners,” said CRA chief executive officer Ford Ennals.

“Radio is always evolving to suit changing listening habits, which is why we continue to grow our audience to new record levels, and 82% of Australians are listening to commercial stations.”

While annual broadcast radio ad revenue was down 4% in 2023, radio is still performing consistently well in a tough media market, according to annual and quarterly figures released today.

Broadcast radio ad revenue for 2023 across the five major metropolitan markets was $673.252 million, compared to $701.402 million in 2022.

Ford Ennals, CEO of CRA, said: ‘‘Overall commercial radio ad revenue remains broadly stable despite a challenging market, with sustained strong broadcast radio revenue and record levels of growth in digital audio revenue in 2023.

“Ad spending in the travel and automotive sectors is encouraging and we are positive about radio’s performance for the year ahead.”

Australians’ voracious appetite for podcasts has been confirmed with the release of the December 2023 Australian Podcast Ranker, which revealed that Australians downloaded 1.03 billion podcasts in 2023, up 26% for the year.

The December Australian Podcast Ranker, which was released today by Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA) and Triton Digital, is a monthly snapshot of the top 200 podcasts listened to by Australians, the top 200 Australian podcasts, the biggest publishers and the most successful podcast sales representatives.

The five most popular podcasts in Australia for 2023 were: Hamish & Andy, Casefile True Crime, Mamamia Out Loud, Shameless and The Kyle & Jackie O Show.

“The Australian Podcast Ranker has confirmed that podcast listening is a passion shared by many Australians. There were over 1 billion podcast downloads in 2023. This equates to over 2.8 million downloads every day,” said Ford Ennals, CEO of CRA.

December, a quieter month for podcast listening as radio stars go on leave and fewer podcast episodes are produced by radio networks, saw monthly downloads increase 29% from December 2022. The top five podcasts for December 2023 were, in order: Casefile True Crime, Mamamia Out Loud, Hamish & Andy, Shameless and The Imperfects.

“It has been an incredible year for podcasts and the Australian Podcast Ranker, with eight new publishers coming on board in 2023, including the ABC in November, which assisted with the December year-on-year increase. Underlying it all is that podcasts are now part of many Australians’ everyday lives. We are the largest consumers of podcasts globally, with 43 per cent listening every month,” Mr Ennals said.

“Australian listeners are dedicated to home grown as well as the best of international content. Four out of the top five podcasts of 2023 and 15 out of the top 20 most popular podcasts in December were produced locally.”

At this time of year we wish to send thanks to our listeners for tuning in. More people than ever before are listening to commercial radio, according to GfK Survey 8. More than 12.25 million people listen weekly across the five major metro markets, underpinned by soaring DAB+ only station listening - that's people listening to commercial radio content they can only get via a DAB+ device, whether at home or in the car.

And with younger Australians tuning into commercial radio in droves, we look forward to the new year with anticipation. More than 87.2% of Australians aged 10-24 are listening for an average of 11 hours, 26 minutes a week, listening for 31 minutes more, YOY.
