Join poet Dan Hogan (Secret Third Thing, Cordite Press 2023) to learn how to dissect your poetry, uncover your strengths and explore creative techniques for generating unexpected new ideas.

This workshop is all about practical creative tools that will enhance your writing and help you understand what’s truly going on “under the hood” of your poetry.

Dan will introduce you to their key writing tools, including cut up techniques and word association to unlock new imagery. You’ll also gain invaluable insight into the redrafting and editing process, drawing on examples from Dan’s own work from before and after publication.

Dan Hogan (they/them) is a writer and editor from San Remo, NSW (Awabakal and Worimi Country). They currently live and work on Dharug and Gadigal Country (Sydney). Dan’s debut book of poetry, Secret Third Thing, was released by Cordite in 2023. Dan’s work has been recognised by the Overland Judith Wright Poetry Prize, Val Vallis Award, XYZ Prize, Harri Jones Prize, Woollahra Digital Literary Award, and a Next Chapter fellowship. Congratulations Patrick Lenton whose short story collection Sexy Tales of Paleontology has been shortlisted for the Russell Prize for Humour Writing 2023! Administered by the State Library of NSW, the $10,000 biennial prize seeks to ‘celebrate, recognise and encourage the humour-writing genre’. Huge congratulations to all the shortlistees, too!

If laughter is the best medicine, these books must be the antidote!

We are thrilled to announce the shortlists for the 2023 Russell Prize for Humour Writing and Humour Writing for Young People Award.

Chair of the judging panel, journalist, author and comedian Wendy Harmer described this year’s entries as a “bumper crop of literary excellence!”

The winners will be announced live on ABC Sydney with Richard Glover and Wendy on Thursday 11 May from 4pm.

"An education system that is built on discrimination is a system that carves out new injustices while exacerbating old ones. Australia’s three-tiered education system already does that without the Religious Discrimination Bill making it worse. Abolition is evidence-based practice. If we’re serious about creating an education system focused on enhancing school life and fostering justice, private schools should be abolished altogether with their resources and assets seized and folded into a reimagined public system."

It is abhorrent and morally indefensible for any government to suggest transphobia is an acceptable practice if you’re rich enough to subject your kids to an educational environment that actively incites prejudice against trans and non-binary people.
