Have you ever read a book and felt like this?

That, for some reason, the book that has been lying around for ages, or that someone has given you, or you've seen in a bookshop and decided to buy without quite knowing why, was meant for you right now?

I have.

And it happens to me all the time.

It probably helps that I read 1-2 books a week...often 2 or 3 at a time.

There might be a sentence or paragraph in some books that cause me to stop and think, literally. Sometimes I can't stop thinking about what I've read, what I think, and why.

That's why I love reading.

So many books, so little time.

If you’re thinking about writing a book you also need to think about how you are going to let the world (well your target audience mainly) know about your book. And, telling people about your book launch a few weeks or a month before hand doesn’t count as engagement.

The key part to creating a book community is involvement and building a clear plan for that involvement from the time you’ve completed your first draft right to till after your book has been launched and you’re sharing it with the world.

Just in time for local elections here in NSW, but not for some 100+ Liberal candidates who didn't get their nominations in on time. Well, it was their party that didn't and boy, are the recriminations ongoing from that. And they remind me of the fictional politician in Tony Farnham's book, Malcolm Rudder from The Shire, as he battles the Party representative, Amber Light and others who have it in for him.

So you’ve self published and launched your book.

Congratulations.

Now the hard work comes in marketing and selling it. Yep, you have to put effort into this, after all there’s no point having a book that the world’s best kept secret.

It can be challenging to know what to do to promote and market your book and not feel like you’re selling shavers or steak knives. One excellent way to increase the visibility of you and your book is to enter book and business awards. I say book and business awards as there are a number of business awards that have categories for marketing and promotion.

But which awards and are they worth the time, effort and investment to enter?

We finally met in person and it was wonderful!

I met up with one of my clients, the wonderful Peter Stanford.

Of course, we've met via Zoom and Peter has been on two of my LinkedIn Lives sharing his knowledge about ChatGPT.

While working remotely has its benefits there's nothing like meeting face-to-face and I prefer it.

Is AI going to help, hinder, empower or emasculate business book authors and business books?

I don't think so for a moment.

That said, I have a deep interest in the whole 'AI is going to (if it hasn't already) completely change the book writing and publishing landscape.

It’s not my role to convince anyone to write and self-publish their business book. I know the time, effort and investment that goes into this.

As The Book Adviser, it’s my role to help business people work out if writing, self publishing and marketing their book is something they want to do and then help them achieve this.

Here are the five questions I ask anyone who wants to talk about their business book ideas:

1. What’s your purpose?
2. What specific knowledge, insight, and tools do you have?
3. Who is your target audience?
4. How committed are you to writing, self publishing and marketing your book?
5. What does success look like to you?

Once you’ve answered the five questions above you’ll have a much clearer picture about whether you want to write your book, or just talk about it.

Social media is just contemporary advertising. Previously there was radio, TV, newspapers, magazine, billboards, side-of-bus advertising. You wouldn’t for a moment ‘advertise’ on all these channels, so approach social media the same way with your ‘advertising’ aka content.

Knowing where your target audience is, who they are reading, watching, listening to will guide you to where you need to spend your time and money.

The reality is you don’t have an unlimited amount of time or the money to ‘advertise’ everywhere. You need to prioritise. Even if you’re going to outsource your social media you need to deeply know where your target audience is.
