ON VIEW// Ryan McGinley: YEARBOOK | Shepparton Art Museum


Exhibition closing 14 July. Free entry.

Now in its final weeks at Shepparton Art Museum, YEARBOOK is the solo Australian premiere for legendary American photographer Ryan McGinley.

Consisting of a single, sprawling work, YEARBOOK features over 700 studio portraits of New York City’s creative community, shot over the span of a decade. Individually printed and adhered to the walls, the constellation of photos in YEARBOOK floods the gallery with colour, form and feeling.

First presented in New York City in 2009, McGinley has shown this ever-evolving work at major public institutions in Tokyo, Denmark, Korea, and Spain. This presentation is made in partnership with PHOTO Australia.

Partnering with the WA Museum Boola Bardip, The Lester Prize invites artists from across Australia to submit portraits of an Australian (or Australians) that they respect or admire, or a self-portrait.⁠

Now in its eighteenth year, this award is one of the nation’s most recognised and prestigious art prizes. With a prize pool totalling over $115,000, the competition is open to artists of all experience levels – emerging, midcareer, and professional.

In 2023, The Lester Prize received over 950 entries from across Australia. With a 65% increase in visitors, nearly 22,000 people viewed the work of last year's finalists.

ARTIST OPPORTUNITY// 2024 Stardust Residency Applications Open / Mparntwe/Alice Springs


Applications close Sunday 19 May 2024.

The Stardust Residency provides a studio space for up to 8 weeks during August/September 2024 and is supported with a $2000 artist fee.

The Stardust Residency was instigated in honour of artist and educator Suzi Lyon, born in Aotearoa/New Zealand but who lived a large part of her creative and insightful life in Mparntwe.

An exhibition of artworks from Suzi’s estate plus contributions from fellow artists and friends was held to raise funds for a residency program to be hosted by WTS in her memory.

In the spirit of creativity and inclusivity, which Suzi championed, the Stardust Residency is open to any artist, resident in Aotearoa/New Zealand or so called ‘Australia’, at any stage of their career or creative aspiration, working in any media.

ON NOW// Michael Galovic, St George Vs The Dragon

Showing at All Saints Anglican, Ambrose St, Hunters Hill, Sydney, until Saturday 4th May

Daily 10am to 2pm, Friday 5-7pm.

Artist and iconographer Michael Galovic is currently presenting a body of work on the theme of St George and the Dragon fittingly housed in the beautiful sandstone church on the leafy peninsula in Hunters Hill.

The story of St George stretches back to the 10th century during the First Crusade where St George sought to kill the evil Dragon who terrorised villagers. The Dragon demanded human sacrifice like the ancient Greek tale of Perseus and Andromeda.

Michael is a renowned iconographer who examines the myriad ways in which the theme of the good triumphing over evil is expressed through the parable and story of St George and the Dragon.

Sculptors are invited to submit sculptures for selection in the 2024 Festival.

Held over 16 days, from 14 September to 29 September 2024, this not-for-profit outdoor and indoor exhibition gives local, regional, interstate and international sculptors an opportunity to exhibit their works in the beautiful rural surroundings of the Wollombi and Laguna Villages in the historic Wollombi Valley, NSW.

The 2024 Wollombi Valley Sculpture Festival is even bigger than previous years introducing new prizes:

• $25,000 – Open Prize
• $10,000 – Highly Commended Prize
• $5,000 – Small Sculpture Prize
• Exposure and Prestige and $1000 allowance – Governor’s Prize

Gallipoli Art Prize// 2024 WINNER

Stencil artist Luke Cornish has won the 2024 Gallipoli Art Prize with his powerful work 'The Pity of War', depicting a woman and a hooded figure huddled together wearing gas masks. Cornish describes the work as "a contemporary reinterpretation of Michelangelo's iconic 'La Pieta', reimagined to convey the profound sorrow experienced by mothers who have lost their children to the ravages of war."

Art & About Sydney promotes creative collaboration between the City of Sydney and artists and cultural organisations.

The program supports projects that temporarily reimagine and reshape spaces in the City of Sydney area.

Australian and international artists, curators, and creatives are invited to be part of the Art and About program.

The program aims to invigorate public and unusual spaces across Sydney, and connect with different communities, creating unique and memorable experiences.

Artists from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply – from visual artists, curators and performers to filmmakers, musicians and theatre companies. Up to $100,000 for each project is available.

CALL FOR ENTRIES// Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize / Australia’s Highest Value Art Prize for Women.

There are four prize categories:
1. Professional Artist Prize of $35,000
2. Emerging Artist Prize of $5,000
3. Indigenous Emerging Artists Prize of $5,000
4. People’s Choice Award $2,000 and $500 Derivan prize pack

Artists are asked to enter an artwork that best reflects their art practice. Any medium – there is no theme.

The Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize is an annual acquisitive prize that was launched in 2017 to advance art and opportunity for emerging and established women artists in Australia.
