October 1: Nationwide protest looms as organizers list expectations from President Tinubu

Some civil society organisations (CSOs) under the aegis of Movement, have declared October 1, 2024 as a ‘National Day of Survival’, to protest the prevailing economic hardship sweeping through the country.

In a statement issued during a press conference at the International Press Centre in Lagos on Thursday, Hassan Soweto, national coordinator of the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), called on Nigerians to engage in peaceful protests nationwide against “anti-poor policies”.

The statement was jointly signed by the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), Movement for Fundamental Change (MFC), Youth Rights Campaign (YRC), Joint Action Front (JAF), and Pan-African Consciousness Renaissance (PACOR-Nigeria). The movement cited the lack of action from the federal government despite the protests of August.

They said the protest aims to address grievances surrounding the fuel price hike, rising food costs, and the impact of inflation on the livelihoods of ordinary Nigerians. They criticised President Bola Tinubu’s government for “exacerbating poverty and hardship”. The movement accused the administration of pursuing policies that disproportionately affect the poor, resulting in mass unemployment, inflation, and food insecurity.

“We invite you on another journey to redeem our nation as we continue to stand against the anti-poor policies of this regime. As is obvious to everyone, none of the demands of our ten days of rage in August has been met. Rather, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu simply went ahead to use our national treasury to procure luxury cars, aircraft, and other luxuries for himself and the first family without caring a hoot about the plea of hungry Nigerians.

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has vowed to ensure effective sanctions are meted out to any official found wanting in the face of allegations that convicted cross dresser, Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky, who was sentenced to six months in prison, was allegedly given an apartment outside the custodial facility.
Speaking at a media interface Friday in Abuja, the minister said the suspension of senior officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, was to ensure unhindered investigation into the matter.
He said: “We will not spare anybody no matter how highly placed. Let’s be patient.
“Investigation is on. But let’s be assured that nobody will be shielded and nobody will be protected.”

Tunji-Ojo expressed confidence in the ability of the investigative panel headed by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani, to discharge its mandate creditably. According to him, members of the committee were carefully selected, with two of them from the civil society...

JUST IN: Alleged Bribery: Reps Invite EFCC Chairman, VeryDarkMan, Bobrisky

Following the House of Representatives resolution to investigate allegations of bribery against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Joint Committees of the House has extended an invitation to the chairman of the commission Ola Olukoyode.

In a letter dated 27th September 2024, the committee asked the EFCC Chairman and the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service to appear on Monday the 30th, with all officers involved in the allegation.

The allegation of bribery against the anti-graft agency and the Nigeria Correctional Service followed a trending social media voice conversation involving one Idris Okuneye, a crossdresser sentenced earlier this year to six months in prison for abuse of the naira.

The trending voice conversation suggested that Idris, popularly known as Bobrisky, paid N15 million to EFCC to drop charges of money laundering initially made against him and that he spent time in a VIP facility instead of prison.
The House Committee is also inviting Bobrisky and a social media influencer, Martins Otse, known as Very Dark Man, on social media who released the voice recording.
