Iโve spent 8 years living the Australian dream, following the rules, navigating countless visa hurdles, and working hard towards Permanent Residency - only to get sick and rejected on medical grounds. These past few years have been the toughest of my life; as if an MS diagnosis wasnโt difficult enough these ongoing challenges have taken their toll. Only close family and friends truly understand the struggles weโve faced, including the substantial amount of money we've spent on visa applications and supporting costs. We even paid $4k just to lodge an appeal with the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, not to mention the legal advice - some of which was poor and ended up costing us a fortune.
My career has also suffered. Iโve been forced to take on temporary office support roles because my visa status is insecure, despite having a 10-year career as a Scrum Master and Digital Project Manager.
The last thing I wanted to do was go public about my health, but unfortunately, I feel I have no other option. Itโs been over three years since we first applied for Residency and more than a year since we lodged our appeal. Despite this, several lawyers have advised us that weโre unlikely to win due to the complexity of the law and would be relying on ministerial intervention which may never come.
I urge that the law be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the contributions the applicants make to this country. We are hard workers, and I believe our efforts should be considered.
