NPT301 TEARDOWN CONTINUES

Many thanks to Geoff Danes who traveled from Western Australia to help out our team with the teardown of our NPT301 turbine. The next steps are to remove the rear turbine disc and to extract the main shaft so that the forward and rear bearings and seals can be replaced.

NPT-301 HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP

We have started the tear down of the NPT-301 High Pressure Fuel Pump today, to evaluate the DC Motor, the pump, and the DC Motor Controller electronics.

The entire assembly was custom designed and manufactured by Noel Penny Turbines for the NPT-301 back in the early 1980’s.

The unit is a 28v DC Commutator Motor driven high pressure fuel pump, however we are uncertain as to the flow rates or delivery pressure.

We have limited information regarding the pump and no electrical schematic, leaving our team to evaluate, reverse engineer and test.

SABRE LEFT HAND SIDE AMMUNITION DOOR RESKIN

Further progress has been made on the CAC Sabre left hand side ammunition door today. Found some scrap .32 alloy in our stores, but the grain runs the wrong way....but we will make it work. Further drilling, rivets and filing before it can be re-attached to the cockpit fuselage section.

BD5J TURBINE 24v ALTERNATOR

Some time was spent last night inspecting the NPT-301 24v Alternator unit. This is an entirely custom component designed by Noel Penny Turbines specifically for the NPT-301 engine. If we are to use the NPT-301 - which we would like to due to it's 300lbs thrust rating - we will need to engineer a Starter/Generator solution that interfaces with the turbine quill shaft. A Starter/Generator would provide for electric start on ground and in flight, greatly improving the safety margin.

(CF29) ACTUATION ARM ASSEMBLY

A quick scotch polish of the control arm shaft, which was showing rust/corrosion. You can see the corrosion extending under the painted surfaces. The assembly is fabricated using 4130 chromoly steel. Wonder if we would be better off Cadmium plating these instead of paint? What have other BD5 builders elected to do here?

BD5 FLAP & AILERON CONTROLS

The previous builder had commenced the fabrication of the flap and aileron control assemblies, which are mounted in the lower fuselage. These parts will be cleaned back to bare metal and inspected, prior to the assemblies being completed and installed into the airframe.

BD5 DRIVE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL CONTINUES

The compression fitting on the clutch housing is proving difficult to remove. The retaining bolt has been loosened off with no issue. However, the alloy compression fitting is seized to the steel tapered split collet that it compresses down onto. We had hoped we could use a pulley puller, but the retainer bolt now slides free and we don’t have a centre point to jack the puller from (see video). Next step is to make up some hardwood wedges and to gently push the compression fitting away from the clutch housing fl**ge.

BD5J SKIN REMOVED, DRIVE SYSTEM NEXT

The rear upper right hand skin has now been removed from the airframe, with just the clean up of the pro-seal left to be completed. We can now proceed with removing the piston drive assembly and prop torque tube and supporting brackets. Once everything has been removed, we will then be in a position to commence the modifications to support the jet thrust tube assembly.

BD-5J MICROJET BUILD UPDATE

The team were able to get some time in this evening on the BD-5J Microjet. The focus at this time is to remove the rear upper right hand side fuselage skins, so that we have access to install the required modifications to convert the BD5 from a piston pusher to a jet aircraft. The skins on the BD5 are quite thin and are both bonded with Pro-Seal and mechanically riveted. To remove the skin you need patience and a gentle hand, to ensure the skins are not damaged to due aggressive manipulation.
