Good to understand the importance of the SW Sydney Koalas

A brief history of the southern Sydney Koala population
There are 3 different Koala populations in the region. Campbelltown was the largest known due to the work by Robert Close. The others being the Blue Mountains and Wollondilly. Each population was genetically different
Each of the populations must be clearly defined and not referred to as one population. If all 3 DNA sequences were mixed, the result would be a very versatile and robust Koala. In the future, this may happen as each population disperses (If allowed) Appin Koalas are part of the southern Highlands population, which as we know has chlamydia, but is slowly creeping up into the Campbelltown population. The Campbelltown population stretches down to Appin, Heathcote and Moorebank. The population was almost wiped out by the Koala fur trade between 1880 and 1923. The small numbers of the Southern Sydney Koala population survived the slaughter of the fur trade in refuge areas in Dharawal National Park and the Cordeau dam catchment south West of Helensburgh. Since the fur trade ended, this small remnant population rebounded to more than 1000 by 2013, and Koalas were beginning to recolonise the bushland west of Appin. Unfortunately, this habitat is now being colonised and destroyed by developers.
