Clíodhna is the Irish Goddess of Love and Beauty, also known as the Queen of the Banshees. She is accompanied by three birds who can cure all illness. It is said one would be lulled into sleep by their birdsong and awaken fully renewed.
Clíodhna is also part of the story of the Blarney Stone. When Cormac McCarthy hit legal issues whilst building his castle, he prayed to Clíodhna. In a dream she told him to kiss the first stone he saw the next morning. He did this and after was able to eloquently argue his case, winning it and completing his castle. To honour Clíodhna, he set the stone as part of the castle where it is visited today and kissed in the hope it will also grant the person with the “gift of the gab”.

Nehallenia is a Germanic Goddess believed to protect those who travelled across the sea. Though her worship was lost over time, a temple dedicated to her was unearthed in 1645, after a huge storm on the north coast of the Netherlands in a region known as Zeeland. The symbols of ship parts as well as the produce traded via the North Sea has led to the belief she was a protector of maritime traders. Other symbols, such as a dog and loaves used to symbolise sacrificial offerings have also connected her to the energies of death.

Ammut is the Egyptian Goddess known as the Devourer of Souls. She resides in the afterlife, close by Osiris and is an integral part of the judgment ceremony. Whilst sometimes being known more as a demon than a goddess, Ammut was not worshipped but feared.

Aranyani is a Hindu Goddess who protects and watches over the forests. She is born when Parvati, overwhelmed at the beauty of trees, makes a wish before a magical Kalpavriksha tree. Though Aranyani is never seen, it is believed you can hear the bells from her anklet as she dances through the trees. Though she is isolated she is never lonely and is worshipped to ensure the forest provides food for those nearby. She is celebrated in a beautiful hymn recited by Parvati.

“Goddess of wild and forest who seems to vanish from the sight. How is it that thou seek not the village? Art thou not afraid?
What time the grasshopper replies and swells the shrill cicala’s voice, Seeming to sound with tinkling bells, the Lady of the Wood exults.
And, yonder, cattle seem to graze, what seems a dwelling-place appears: Or else at eve the Lady of the Forest seems to free the wains.
Here one is calling to his cow, another there hath felled a tree: At eve the dweller in the wood fancies that somebody hath screamed.
The Goddess never slays, unless some murderous enemy approach. Man eats of savoury fruit and then takes, even as he wills, his rest.
Now have I praised the Forest Queen, sweet-scented, redolent of balm,The Mother of all sylvan things, who tills not but hath stores of food.”
