It's here again ...

To celebrate Autism Acceptance Month, Understanding Oscar is now $20 for the month of April!

Understanding Oscar is a beautiful children's book that can be shared with one and all, highlighting the importance of acceptance and inclusion.

โ€˜This is an excellent book on so many levels - well done Jade Chapman for exploring autistic Oscar's tricky behaviour with such compassion and understanding. Helping siblings and playmates understand the 'why' beneath some of Oscar's often unpredictable behaviours and why it can be hard for him to make better choices allows his brothers to connect with him better. The illustrations are beautiful and done by Naya Lazareva. This needs to be in homes, ECEC's and schools to help build awareness and understanding about autism.โ€™ - Maggie Dent, Australian parenting author, educator and speaker.

When Someone In Your House Is Autistic

Thank you NeuroWild for taking the time to create such a beautiful and relatable resource aimed at parents/adults to use with their non-autistic children (to explain a bit about their autistic sibling/s).

In April we celebrate Autism Acceptance & Neurodiversity ๐ŸŒˆ

By openly accepting others, we create an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and encouraged to be their authentic selves.

I often think how nice the world would be if it were filled with acceptance, understanding and inclusion. Where we unite, not in spite of our differences, but because of them.

So the footy season has now wrapped up for Banjo and George. They love their footy and have both played since the age of 4 years.

In the early days taking Oscar to watch his big brother play was a challenge. There were many outside factors that would lead to over-stimulation and as result he would feel the need to flee. I would watch the majority of Banjoโ€™s games from afar, normally in a quiet area Osc would choose to self regulate. I would also from time-to-time call on the grandparents to look after Osc, or if he was having a not so good morning we would skip the footy entirely and stay at home together.

Fast forward to this year and I am so proud of him, and how far he has come. Like his brothers, Osc lived for Saturday football and would have the biggest smile when he would see his Engadine Dragons hoodie laid out for him to wear.

From putting on his hoodie, to sitting on the team bench, cheering from the sidelines, and joining in at the end of match gatherings. He always felt safe, included and not left out of the fun!

Thank you everyone at Engadine Dragons JRLFC, especially the U6 Gold & U11 Silverโ€™s, for making this year the best year yet! โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ‰

"Motherhood is about raising and celebrating the child you have, not the child you thought you would have. It's about understanding that he is exactly the person he is supposed to be. And that, if you're lucky, he just might be the teacher who turns you into the person you are supposed to be." โ€” Joan Ryan

This post is a day late but I really wanted to shine a light on Banjo at the end of Carers Week ๐Ÿ’™

Being a sibling to a child with disability is not easy. And like all siblings, these two have their moments. However Banjo shows so much love and acceptance toward his brother, proudly celebrates his wins, and it's reassuring to know he'll always be in his corner!

You're amazing Banj ๐Ÿคฉ

Not only do I love, appreciate & see all that you do, I know your brother does too!

Today is the first day of National Carers Week ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ

It is a time to recognise and celebrate the incredible contribution that 2.65 million Australians make to provide care and support to their loved ones!

If you identify as a carer, I honour and acknowledge the wonderful job you do, each and every day!

Today is your last chance to grab a copy of Understanding Oscar for $20.

For those who havenโ€™t read my book, has captured each character beautifully in this story.

Oscar in particular, who does not always show his emotions clearly to us, is accompanied by a friendly shadow (pictured here). This character helps to portray Oscarโ€™s inner self throughout the book โ€“ I think heโ€™s pretty cute too!!

We love Maria !!

For many years now Maria has privately fitted Oscar before opening her store to the public.

She has seen Osc through preschool, fitted his first pair of school shoes and continues to serve him to this day.

As a mum, shopping with an autistic child can be challenging. Maria however is kind, exceptionally patient and always provides a quiet and calm experience when shopping for shoes.

Inclusivity means doing everything you can to help autistic children to feel as comfortable as possible. Thank you Maria for ticking this box each and every time โœ…๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ’š

April is Autism Acceptance Month ๐ŸŒˆ

However, I should say that my family accepts, celebrates and loves all things about Oscar every day of the year, along with his amazing autistic friends.

I won't pretend that my parenting journey with Osc has been easy. We have endured many challenges, cloudy periods and heartache over the years. I have also doubted my ability as his mother on numerous occasions, always questioning if I have done enough.

The best advice I have received to date came from one of Oscar's teachers in the early days. "Just make sure you enjoy him", she said. These simple words changed my perspective of parenting a child with disability, made me relax my expectations (on both of us) and move forward, making sure that I take time to enjoy and relish in the beauty of his differences each and every day!

I'm so proud of Osc. Many things don't come easy to him, and he has to work a lot harder than his brothers and neurotypical peers in different ways. He's brave, strong, determined when he puts his mind to things and I know he'll conquer his own life the best way he knows how - 'in his own time and space'.

What a beautiful morning spent where Understanding Oscar has been chosen as the childrenโ€™s โ€˜Book of the Weekโ€™.

Not only was I invited to come and read to the little 'Inventors and Investigators' but I was thrilled to be a part of their 'Walk for Autism' fundraiser.

A very special morning all round ๐Ÿ’š

It's been almost a year since Understanding Oscar was released.

I will forever be grateful for the wonderful support and positive feedback I have received ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ

The highlight, however, comes from watching Banjo read our family's story to George. Normally Oscar is around too, keeping busy in the background or popping his head in every now and again.

Being the sibling of an autistic child (or child with disability) can be both challenging and enriching.

I am so proud of these boys for accepting and always trying to understand more about their brother. In doing this, it helps strengthen their relationship and bond. A bond that is like no other!

Saturday night family zoom with the community, and an opportunity to read my book to these amazing kids.

Skillz4me started in 2016 when Sarah & Jase, the parents of two children with disability, decided to fill a gap in our community and offer an all inclusive sports program to bring other families together in The Sutherland Shire.

There are not enough words to describe how awesome Sarah, Jase and the Skillz4me team are and the important role they play in our community. Thank you!! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

Book Week 2021 ๐Ÿ“š

My memory from Book Week during my schooling years was an exciting time to celebrate reading, and to share with your peers favourite characters from classics through to contemporary books. Never did it cross my mind that one day I could write a book that a student would take to school โ€ฆ

Fast forward to 2021 and I have received this wonderful message (and photo):

My son Ollie dressed for Book Week with your book that is going to be read out to the class. Ollie has autism and so does his brother. He dressed in Oscarโ€™s school uniform which is an Ed Support School.
My heart is full and proud to be a mum of these amazing boys and your book has helped Ollie stand up and say this book is about me and my brother.

- Vania, mother of four

Again, thank you Vania for sharing this beautiful message with me. I am so happy to hear that my book has resonated well with your family, even down to Oscar's name. I am also immensely proud of your Ollie for stepping up to advocate during Book Week - what a champ! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ
