AND WE’RE ROLLING
[episode 8 - Turia Pitt. Far North Queensland, Australia]

Hello!! When I started this podcast 18 months ago Turia Pitt was at the top of my wish list - she’s an international inspiration - and here we are.
Turia Pitt is grit and hard work. She’s also the queen of mindset and a firm believer that anyone can run.
In 2011, at the age of 24, Turia was a fitness ju**ie with her dream job as a successful mining engineer, when she was caught in an out-of-control grassfire while competing in a 100km ultramarathon in Western Australia.
It was several hours before medical help arrived and Turia was air-lifted out of the remote desert barely alive, with full thickness burns to 65 percent of her body. Turia lost seven of her fingers and spent over six months undergoing excruciating rehab.
The doctors didn’t expect Turia to survive, never mind walk, run, or be independent again.
But in what is truly a story of triumph over the unimaginable, Turia has gone on to complete two ironman competitions, written best selling books, and become a mum with her partner Michael to two young boys.
Turia has also helped hundreds of women (mostly mums!) learn to run themselves through her program RUN with Turia. Which I’ve done - twice - and truly loved it.
I chat with Turia from her new home up in Far North Queensland, about mindset, motherhood and making new friends as an adult. Turia is really funny and we bond over our love of margaritas and our often eccentric dads who taught us to always “just have a go” and “never give up”.
Turia reminds us about why it’s so important to fill our own cup and put our own needs first, and to be ok with imperfection and being a beginner all over again.

[episode 7 - Jodi Wilson. Author and Photographer, Tasmania, Australia]

Perhaps it’s coming through a global pandemic, or the rising cost of living, or the passing of the great leader and monarch Queen Elizabeth II.

All of the above and more probably - so it’s no wonder that it can feel like the world is in a bit of a spin at the moment.

Well this week’s episode will hopefully help. It’s all about taking a deep breath and pausing to find clarity and also joy in the simple things.

Practising simplicity. And the easy, small steps you can take and brave choices you can make for a life less distracted.

Jodi Wilson is an author, photographer and mother of four who has not only written the book, but has made her own life-changing decision to flip everything about the way her family lives.

In the midst of the rush and the race of everyday life and saving for a house deposit in a soaring property market, in a suburb she didn't really feel connected to, Jodi felt frustrated and complacent. She felt unmotivated, uninspired and frankly quite angry. She knew something big had to change.

It was a gamble, but Jodi and her husband, sold most of their belongings, spent their hard-earned house deposit on a car and a caravan,
and packed up their four kids, to travel Australia.

I love this chat with Jodi - who now happily lives with her family near the beach in Tasmania. There’s no nagging or preaching. Instead Jodi gently reminds us about the value in owning less, reconnecting with nature, respecting those dreams tucked away inside … brewing, and observing tiny moments of joy that prove we don’t need a lot to live well.

Let me know what you think!

AND WE’RE ROLLING
~From Human Planet to Bear Grylls: Dale Templar on the Secrets to Producing Award-Winning Docos~

[episode 5: Dale Templar. Documentary Producer/Director. Malaga, Spain]
BBC’s Human Planet is one of the most spectacular documentary series ever made. It took four years to make and was filmed in more than 40 countries - many of the most remote on the globe.

Human Planet uncovers nature’s greatest human stories, and celebrates our ability to adapt and live in virtually every habitat - from scorching deserts to frozen poles and steamy jungles.

The landmark series received eight BAFTA nominations, winning two: for cinematography and editing.

It also won an Emmy and best natural history series at the Panda awards.

And this week’s guest, Dale Templar, was the series producer - the creative brains behind it all.

As a documentary and TV maker, Dale specialises in filming in extreme and often dangerous locations with both humans and wildlife.

Her adventures have taken her everywhere, including Antarctica and the North Pole. (And she has produced and directed a range of stars including British adventurer Bear Grylls.)

This is such a rare chance to hear from one of the greatest doco producers on the planet.
Dale reflects on the lessons she learnt from producing the Human Planet series; the grit and gumption needed to be a world-class producer - especially since forming her own independent production company, One Tribe TV, with her husband; and her experience of working with Bear Grylls and other celebs in the jungles of Costa Rica.

~HABARI TURNS TEN
I can’t (and won’t) believe it, but it’s ten years since this photo was taken. It was after a long, hot, dusty and joyous day photographing Ethiopia's stunning Borena tribe in the Omo Valley.

On the bonnet of our guide Alex’s cruiser, we backed up our precious pix before calling it a day and camping out under the stars with the Borena. The next morning we woke up, and did it all over again, and again and again. Heaven. Ben and I met families living on the edges of civilisation - literally off the map - as we witnessed the stark range of ceremonies, rites of passage and life in the Omo.

It was eye-opening and life-affirming. And Benny and I managed to be engaged at the end of it! Malaria, typhoid, scorpion sting, marriage proposal.

Before leaving for our trip, I still remember my dear boss at the time looking at me with concern as I explained our plan to trade in our day jobs and leave for Africa. “But what if it doesn’t work out?” he asked. A fair question, but one we never really asked ourselves. We just knew it would. And it did. It always does… in a roundabout, bumpy, hold-onto-your-hat, kinda way.

And from Ethiopia we hit the road, through Kenya then down the mighty West Coast of the continent before returning back over to Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan… making new friends.

This trip was the birth of Habari Productions, and with the support of our family and friends, I’m proud of what has followed: A Queen St Gallery photographic exhibition curated by Dad (with the wildest opening night organised by Mum and crates of wine and champas freighted in from the Barossa by Ben’s dad. Thanks Stu!!), our work shortlisted by Nat Geo, the release of our photo book ‘Tribe’, funds raised for Doctors Without Borders and UNFPA, two more exhibitions, a TedX Talk, our Hadzabe photos used as part of U.S. school curriculum and also a primary school in the Netherlands, and most importantly, new friends and a unique collection of stories, photos and lessons to share with our two daughters.

And now, as the borders reopen after the Age of Covid, a new round of projects are calling. Habari Productions has more stories to tell.

Was chatting with the wonderful on her podcast Company and also listed a few of my fave reads for her Sunday newsletter. Thought I’d share:
~Human Planet by Dale Templar and Brian Leith
This glorious hardcover accompanies the BBC Natural History Unit series and is chock-full of stunning photographs and intriguing first-hand accounts. It celebrates our survival across habitats and looks at how humans have carved out a life in the most challenging parts of the planet. I produced a story with co-author Dale Templar for “Sunrise” when she was promoting the book and the series here in Australia, and loved her instantly. She’s uber curious, has a true zest for life and passed on a winning lesson - “It’s never too late to change paths.” A great read if you’re feeling a little stuck and need a reminder of the grand expanse waiting out there to be explored.
~Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owen
The beauty of this writing had me in tears within the opening pages. I also loved the celebration of the natural world and the life lessons Kya takes from the marshland - from the fireflies to the seagulls to the changing tides.
~Untamed by Glennon Doyle
“You are a goddam cheetah.” Be yourself; trust yourself; unlock the cage. Bring it on!
~The Carpet Wars by Christopher Kremmer
So much to learn and digest from this enjoyable tome. I’ve returned to the chapters over the years.
~Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty
A good read to rip through after a long day at work.
~My Greek Island Home by Claire Lloyd
This is written by my style queen and also dear friend, Claire Lloyd, who quit her successful career in London as an artist, designer and photographer and found herself on the Greek Island of Lesvos with a reinvigorated sense of peace and creative drive.
~Tribe: Life on the Edge by Stephanie Hunt and Ben Hogarth
I’m very proud of this book. and I put it together after our year travelling through West Africa and then over to Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Sudan and Ethiopia’s Omo Valley. We spent time living with and photographing some of the most isolated and endangered tribes on the planet. 🌍

Season 2 is here!!!

[episode one - Alison Bell. Melbourne, Australia]
In my time I’ve been pretty lucky to interview and produce stories with some incredible people - the Dalai Lama, The Black Eyed Peas etc etc (brag, brag, brag...) but I tell you what, interviewing this week’s guest, Alison Bell, had me feeling over-the-top nervous and excited.

Alison is the co-creator and star of hit ABC comedy The Letdown which was picked up by Netflix and co-produced for Season 2, bagging a heap of awards along the way.

If you haven’t seen it, the show centres around Audrey, mother of a 2-month-old, who joins a new-parents support group, which she initially thinks she doesn't need -- but soon realises those kooky parents are exactly who she needs to survive motherhood. The Letdown is hilarious but also explores darker and often taboo topics.

We laugh a lot in this chat and cover so much! Such as shooting the pilot with zero budget, the scene she is most proud of, pitching to Netflix and being recognised in LA, and working with the hilarious - and now mega star - Celeste Barber.

We also delve into Alison's personal experience of mixing motherhood and comedy writing and how much of the script and those enchanting characters are based on real life.

And a big shout out to my own mothers group - who kept me sane, and stuffed with caffeine and cake in that first year and beyond.

Hope you enjoy it!

The UN expects 47 million women will go into extreme poverty by September of this year. That number was due to go down, but because of the flow-on effects of COVID-19 the number increased.

Al Jazeera principal presenter Folly Bah Thibault talks about the repercussions the coronavirus is having on women around the world, during our interview on our new podcast, And We’re Rolling with Stephanie Hunt. (Listen via the link in bio or follow for more.)

22/07/2021

“I remember standing in the middle of the UN General Assembly Hall, on the world stage, literally, thinking, “What the hell am I doing here?” I mean, why am I here? Why am I subjecting myself to this! I was shaking, and sweating… but once you get into it, you just roll with it. And we ended up doing a great show. And since then, James and I actually have been hosting the Nobel Peace Prize interview every year, live from Oslo. And it's been amazing. That first experience, I think, built more confidence in me to be able to do these live shows in front of a live audience.
I think you just need to keep calm and say to yourself that it will end. I mean, it's not forever, you're not going to be in that position forever. Obviously, just clear your head and think about nothing else.”

Some great advice from Folly Bah Thibault during our chat about surviving on air and public speaking nerves and getting through those tough moments.

[episode two - Folly Bah Thibault. Doha, Qatar]
Al Jazeera principal presenter Folly Bah Thibault has interviewed everyone from world leaders to superstars and covered the biggest international live breaking news events. It’s a stellar career, but she tells me she landed her first radio gig as an intern when the presenter called in sick and she fell into TV by accident.

In our wonderful chat, Folly explains how she’s worked to overcome prejudice and imposter syndrome and she speaks candidly about the work-life juggle, especially during the era of COVID-19 homeschooling.

Folly shares her story of being flown to Dubai to interview rap star Akon, secretly three-months pregnant with horrendous morning sickness, and doing her best not to throw up on camera.

And the moment she stood in the middle of the UN General Assembly hall - literally the world stage - about to host a live debate, shaking and sweating and thinking, ‘What the hell am I doing here?’

~Virtual Field Trips~

We are very honoured to have our Hadzabe Tribe and Serengeti Migration photographs included in the program which is being adopted in a range of middle school classrooms across the United States.

The interactive program documents the unique stories of Black persons, groups, and cultures in North America, beginning in Ancient Africa continuing to modern events and movements.

The photos will be used alongside original artefacts to create virtual field trips to take students and educators on “a colorful journey to embracing an inclusive account of American history.”

On the eve of International Women’s Day we want to celebrate and shine a big fat spotlight on women who innovate, create, inspire and continue to support the women around them.

We kick off our Habari showcase with a chat with luxury safari chef and guide, Charley Swynnerton, who is based in Tanzania. For Charley, a typical day at work could be leading a group during the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti or being flown to a secluded beach on the Tanzanian coast to create the perfect seafood fare.

It may sound ridiculously glamorous, but this is no role for the faint-of-heart, especially during a global pandemic.

The full sit-down chat, which also included her talented brother , who took the photos and videos you’ll see, recalls a childhood centred around the slow and dreamy beaches of Zanzibar and the Tanzanian coast;
the time she stood face-to-face with a male leopard and chased two hyenas and a honey badger from her kitchen tent in the dead of the night; and being told by her boss that it was time to leave and start her own business or she’d have to be fired. Charley’s delicious beef shin stew recipe and her signature coastal cocktail mix are also ready to read via the link in our bio. Please enjoy it all and let us know what you think.
