The dark energy pushing our universe apart may not be what it seems, scientists say

NEW YORK (AP) โ€” Distant, ancient galaxies are giving scientists more hints that a mysterious force called dark energy may not be what they thought.

Astronomers know that the universe is being pushed apart at an accelerating rate and they have puzzled for decades over what could possibly be speeding everything up. They theorize that a powerful, constant force is at play, one that fits nicely with the main mathematical model that describes how the universe behaves. But they can't see it and they don't know where it comes from, so they call it dark energy.

It is so vast it is thought to make up nearly 70% of the universe โ€” while ordinary matter like all the stars and planets and people make up just 5%.

But findings published earlier this year by an international research collaboration of more than 900 scientists from around the globe yielded a major surprise. As the scientists analyzed how galaxies move they found that the force pushing or pulling them around did not seem to be constant. And the same group published a new, broader set of analyses Tuesday that yielded a similar answer.

โ€œI did not think that such a result would happen in my lifetime,โ€ said Mustapha Ishak-Boushaki, a cosmologist at the University of Texas at Dallas who is part of the collaboration.

What is the DESI collaboration?

Called the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, it uses a telescope southwest of Tucson, Arizona to create a three-dimensional map of the universe over 11 billion years to see how galaxies have clustered throughout time and across space. That gives scientists information about how the universe evolved, and where it might be heading.

The map they are building would not make sense if dark energy were a constant force, as it is theorized. Instead, the energy appears to be changing or weakening over time. If that is indeed the case, it would upend astronomers' standard cosmological model. It could mean that dark energy is very different than what scientists thought โ€” or that there may be something else altogether going on.

โ€œItโ€™s a time of great excitement, and also some head-scratching and confusion,โ€ said Bhuvnesh Jain, a cosmologist at the University of Pennsylvania who is not involved with the research.

The collaboration's latest finding points to a possible explanation from an older theory: that across billions of years of cosmic history, the universe expanded and galaxies clustered as Einstein's general relativity predicted.

Is dark energy dead?

The new findings aren't definitive. Astronomers say they need more data to overturn a theory that seemed to fit together so well. They hope observations from other telescopes and new analyses of the new data over the next few years will determine whether the current view of dark energy stands or falls.

โ€œThe significance of this result right now is tantalizing,โ€ said Robert Caldwell, a physicist at Dartmouth College who is not involved with the research, "but it's not like a gold-plated measurement."

Why does dark energy matter?

Thereโ€™s a lot riding on the answer. Because dark energy is the biggest component of the universe, its behavior determines the universeโ€™s fate, explained David Spergel, an astrophysicist and president of the Simons Foundation. If dark energy is constant, the universe will continue to expand, forever getting colder and emptier. If itโ€™s growing in strength, the universe will expand so speedily that itโ€™ll destroy itself in what astronomers call the Big Rip.

โ€œNot to panic. If this is whatโ€™s going on, it wonโ€™t happen for billions of years," he said. โ€œBut we'd like to know about it.โ€

โ€”โ€”

This story was first published on Nov. 19, 2024. It was updated on Nov. 20, 2024 to correct the location of the telescope used by the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. It is southwest of Tucson, Arizona, not in Tucson. It also corrects the description of the instrument's three-dimensional map of the universe. The telescope mapped how the universe evolved over 11 billion years, but the universe is about 13.7 billion years old.

Duct-taped banana sells for $6.2 million at art auction

NEW YORK (AP) โ€” A piece of conceptual art consisting of a simple banana, duct-taped to a wall, sold for $6.2 million at an auction in New York on Wednesday, with the winning bid coming from a prominent cryptocurrency entrepreneur.

โ€œComedian,โ€ by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, was a phenomenon when it debuted in 2019 at Art Basel Miami Beach, as festivalgoers tried to make out whether the single yellow piece of fruit affixed to a white wall with silver duct tape was a joke or cheeky commentary on questionable standards among art collectors. At one point, another artist took the banana off the wall and ate it.

The piece attracted so much attention that it had to be withdrawn from view. But three editions sold for between $120,000 and $150,000, according to the gallery handling sales at the time.

Five years later, Justin Sun, founder of cryptocurrency platform TRON, has now paid more than 40 times that higher price point at the Sothebyโ€™s auction. Or, more accurately, Sun purchased a certificate of authenticity that gives him the authority to duct-tape a banana to a wall and call it โ€œComedian.โ€

The piece attracted heavy attention at the busy auction at Sotheby's, with attendees in the crowded room holding up phones to take photos as two handlers wearing white gloves stood at both sides of the banana.

Bidding started at $800,000 and within minutes shot up to $2 million, then $3 million, then $4 million, and higher, as the auctioneer, Oliver Barker, joked โ€œDon't let it slip away.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t miss this opportunity," Barker said. โ€œThese are words I've never thought I'd say: Five million dollars for a banana.โ€

The final hammer price announced in the room was $5.2 million, which didn't include the about $1 million in auction house fees, paid by the buyer.

In a statement, Sun said the piece โ€œrepresents a cultural phenomenon that bridges the worlds of art, memes, and the cryptocurrency community.โ€ But he said the latest version of โ€œComedian" won't last long.

โ€œAdditionally, in the coming days, I will personally eat the banana as part of this unique artistic experience, honoring its place in both art history and popular culture,โ€ Sun said.

Sothebyโ€™s calls Cattelan โ€œamong Contemporary Artโ€™s most brilliant provocateurs.โ€

โ€œHe has persistently disrupted the art worldโ€™s status quo in meaningful, irreverent, and often controversial ways,โ€ the auction house said in a description of โ€œComedian.โ€

The sale came a day after a painting by the Belgian surrealist Renรฉ Magritte sold for $121.2 million, a record for the artist, at a separate auction.

โ€œThe Empire of Light,โ€ an eerie nighttime streetscape below a pale blue daytime sky, sold Tuesday as part of Christieโ€™s sale of the collection of interior designer Mica Ertegun, who died last year at age 97.

The sale lifts Magritte into the ranks of artists whose works have gone for more than $100 million at auction. Magritte is the 16th member of the club, which also includes Leonardo da Vinci, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol, according to the market analyst firm Artprice.

โ€œThe Empire of Light,โ€ executed in 1954, was one of 17 versions of the same scene that Magritte painted in oil. Marc Porter, chairman of Christieโ€™s Americas, called the sale โ€œa historic moment in our saleroom.โ€

The $121.2 million price included the auction houseโ€™s fees. The buyer was a telephone bidder whose identity was not disclosed.

Snow in the forecast: Cold temps, winter storm warnings coming for Northeast

Colder weather will descend on much of the East Coast late this week and a winter storm will bring both rain and snow that could reach up to a foot at higher elevations in parts of the Northeast, forecasters said.

Temperatures across much of the eastern part of the country will drop from highs in the 60s and 70s on Wednesday to the 40s and 50s on Thursday, the weather service said. Even Florida and parts of the southeast will feel some chill: temperatures 5-15 degrees below average could be felt through Friday, according to AccuWeather.

While rain is likely across the Northeast later Wednesday into Thursday, there is a high probability for at least 4 inches of snow by Friday night in northeast Pennsylvania and the southern Catskills of New York, the National Weather Service said.

'Bomb cyclone' strikes: 2 dead, widespread power outages in Washington

"Impactful snowfall" will also reach the Allegheny Mountains at higher elevations in West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, the weather service said. There, snow could total up to 1 foot.

"Travel could be difficult. Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous," the weather service in Albany, New York, said as it declared a winter weather advisory between Thursday afternoon and early Saturday morning.

Snow forecast for winter 2024: When will first snow fall?

The storm will bring some relief to what has been an unusually dry spell for the region, from Virginia up through New England. There, red flag wildfire warnings have been issued and New York City declared its first drought warning in over two decades.

โ€œBefore the snow arrives, weโ€™ll see some much-needed rain to help with the brush fires and drought conditions," AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.

Winter weather advisories were in effect Wednesday in pockets of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky and North Carolina.

Great Plains region sees 'near blizzard' conditions
Heavy snow and gusty winds were creating hazardous conditions in the central part of the country Wednesday. "Near blizzard" conditions throughout the northern Plains are coming from a slow-moving low pressure system near the Minnesota-North Dakota border, the weather service said.

Snowfall totals across the Dakotas and northwest Minnesota could be up to 4 inches. High winds will be more widespread, and reach as far as eastern Montana and Nebraska. Gusts could exceed 60 mph through Wednesday night before weakening and calming into Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest faces a dangerous "bomb cyclone" and an atmospheric river.
