Gerke business expects EPA fine

Gerke Waste Management has been served an Environmental Protection Notice to cease operating its business at Cuckoo.

Owner Robin Gerke confirmed he had been operating a business on his own land, dumping green waste and building materials on his property for “many years”.

“It’s on my land – I didn’t realise I needed a permit,” he said.

“There has never been any hard waste dumping. I have been sorting the material to burn the timber offcuts and green waste and taking out the steel to recycle.”

An investigation by the Environment Protection Authority is underway into allegation of “significant unlawful waste disposal”.

EPA Director and Chief Executive Officer, Wes Ford, said a notice was served on the business late Tuesday, ordering disposal of waste at the property to cease and for the business not to disturb the waste that has already been deposited.

“The unlawful disposal of waste material has the potential to cause significant environmental and public health impacts,” Mr Ford said.

“Gerke Waste Management will have the option of finding authorised facilities to take their skip bins.”

Mr Gerke said Veolia would be conducting business on its behalf, with around 10 skip bins emptied a week.

Mr Gerke said he expected to be fined for his actions but was planning to also sell or close his business to retire, at the age of 72.

“The cost of disposing product has increased significantly and the amount of waste being dumped in the bush is unbelievable – it’s a tip out there,” Mr Gerke said.

“There are a lot of businesses out there who aren’t happy with this situation.”

++++++++++++++Edit+++++++++++++++++++

So, it turns out this was a reprint created for the paper’s Centenary celebration! Regardless, it’s still pretty cool to look back at where it all began!
It was lovely to meet Shirley and hear a bit about her history too.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
How exciting to receive a visit from Shirley Smith today with nothing other than an original first edition of the paper - Volume 1, No 1 : Friday, December 17, 1909. Price Threepence!
It is signed by the original publisher Robert McColl.
Shirley found it while “spring cleaning” her Bridport unit. It is in perfect condition.
I am looking forward to having it framed to hang above my desk - it’s not lost on me how important this publication is to the great North East region but this will certainly be a permanent reminder of its wonderful contribution for such a long period of history.
