Bennelong says Yes! 🗳️ Today, I’m out with fellow volunteers in Ryde, 🚪knocking on doors, 🗣️having conversations and answering questions as we approach this historic moment in our nation’s history.

I’m voting “YES” because this Referendum is a critical first step in ensuring remains independent from political influence and bureaucratic interference. It’s about empowering a diverse group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to actively shape the policies and address the challenges that directly impact their communities. 🖤💛❤️

Happy ! Today is a day to proudly promote Auslan as our native and preferred language for Deaf people in Australia, as well as recognise the culture and history of the Deaf community.

and the Deaf community want to make 13th April a permanent official celebration fixture on the Deaf Community’s calendar.

This will promote and increase awareness of Auslan and its community of users to the broader Australian community. It will also create momentum in pushing for Auslan to be formally recognised as an official minority language in Australia.

"Life is funny, clumsy and awkward." As soon as the amazing Maria Thattil spoke these words during her talk at Ryde Library earlier this week, I knew we were in for a special night.

Maria shared remarkable stories of how she overcame challenges like racism, sexism, and mental health set-backs to become just the third woman of colour to represent Australia in the Miss Universe competition.

Maria's book, 'Unbounded', is not just another memoir, but a practical guide to help readers attain self-mastery, love themselves fearlessly, and break free from the shackles that bind them. It's a MUST-READ for exploring your own identity, breaking free from your limiting beliefs, and ultimately live your best life.

Had a super fun time with the very friendly and welcoming Ryde Pickleball in the Park crew. Thanks for having me along for a "d**k" (I think I'm using the term correctly)!

As one of the fastest growing sports on Earth, Pickleball is both a blast to play and one of the greatest community builders we've seen in years. It's easy to learn for all ages and abilities, whilst being challenging enough for those with a more competitive streak. I can see why there's a need for more Pickleball venues in City of Ryde & Hunter's Hill Council to meet the growing demand.

Ryde Pickelball in the Park hosts games every morning and 2 evenings a week at locations in , , , , & , and their aim is to promote health, fitness, fun, and social cohesion (while advancing ones' pickleball skills in the process).

So why not give it a go!

🚨 Whilst TG Millner may be saved for now, another side to the story is the bushland earmarked for destruction to create Eastwood Rugby's new home.

Fred Caterson Reserve is the last remaining large parcel of bushland in the Castle Hill area, yet The Hills Shire Council is pushing to destroy 52,000 sq metres of it.

Saving TG Millner also means saving Fred Caterson Reserve. Retaining our precious open space here will mean significantly less if the can is kicked down the proverbial road for another to be destroyed nearby.

Support the Friends of Fred Caterson Reserve's campaign by signing this petition, urging the Hills Shire Council to reject this plan: https://chng.it/FW8XDytQKx

🧠 Today is World Mental Health Day - 10th October - and this year's theme is to "make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority".

Did you know: 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental health problem in any given year. That means that every person is likely to know someone who is experiencing a mental health problem, whether that is a family member, a friend or colleague. In fact, mental illness is now said to affect every Australian either directly or indirectly. This makes mental health everybody’s business and demonstrates the need for community care models that empower individuals where they live, work and play. Thanks to , City of Ryde residents can enrol and complete a fully subsidised (free) accredited Mental Health First Aid course with . See my for more details.

Have Your Say on the Pidding Park - Proposed Dedicated Dog Off-Leash Area

Closing on 27 September 2022, 11:59 PM

The is seeking your feedback on a proposal to relocate and upgrade the dog off-leash Area at Pidding Park, Ryde.

At the Council meeting on 26 July 2022 Council resolved to consult with the community to relocate the dog off leash area to the southern corner of Pidding Park in the space between the sports field and the existing natural area; and for a new design to be developed to include dog exercise equipment, seating, shade, fencing, drinking water and waste disposal bags and bins.

Currently the use of these sports fields are shared between the community for range of activities including organised sport, dog off-leash and other recreation activities. Dogs are not permitted off-leash during sports training and competition.

This proposal would provide the community with a new dedicated dog off-leash area at Pidding Park available for use 7 days per week (including when organised sport is taking place). It would also help Council to protect, maintain and provide the community with safer sports fields.

The draft concept design for the dedicated enclosed dog off-leash area includes fencing with double gate entries, dog exercise equipment, shelter with seating, drinking water, dog waste disposal bins with bags, new path from the car park and an environmental buffer to protect local flora and fauna.

A report to Council will be prepared on the outcomes of this consultation in late 2022.

Gladesville Town Centre Activation Project

Link in Bio - Have Your Say closes 26 September 2022, 11:59 PM

The City of Ryde has been awarded funding from the NSW Government ‘Streets As Shared Spaces Program’. This program supports councils to deliver trial changes in our streets / neighbourhoods that help test the community’s appetite for more permanent changes.

The Gladesville Town Centre Activation Project will see the temporary closure of Linsley Street (between Victoria Road and Western Crescent) between September and December 2022. This area will be reimagined into an interesting and inviting shared space that will include public seating, landscaping and interactive elements.

The would like to hear your feedback on what you would like to see in this space and how it can help support the local community and businesses.

Today marks Earth Overshoot Day for 2022. It's the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year.

Just as a bank statement tracks income against expenditures, it measures the global population’s demand for and ecosystems’ supply of resources and services. This means, from now until the end of the year, we're well and truly eating into our savings, with no extra income to top up our balance.

Think Australia's only small by comparison to the rest of the world? Well, unfortunately, if everyone in the world lived like Australia, the Earth Overshoot Day would have been months ago, on March 23, 2022.

In order to , there are things we can do to improve our ecological deficit, starting with effective government policy. Things like how we power ourselves, design and manage our cities, how we feed ourselves, and how we help nature thrive are all important solutions to addressing the health of our bank balance.

(Earth’s Biocapacity / Humanity’s Ecological Footprint) x 365 = Earth Overshoot Day

This National Reconciliation Week, I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the Land on which I stand. I acknowledge the Wallumattagal People of the Dharug Nation and pay my respects to Elders past and present.

I recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People as the First Australians and I am committed to honouring their unique cultural and spiritual relationships to the land, waters and seas, and their rich contribution to society. I also acknowledge their continuing connection to Country, and that their land and sovereignty were never ceded.

Whose Country are you on?

First Nations People have lived for time immemorial in Wallumatta, on the lands we now call the City of Ryde. The Wallumattagal, a clan of the greater Dharug Nation, are the Traditional Owner and Custodians of this Land.

Wallumattagal territory follows the north bank of the Burramatta River (Parramatta River) from the Turrumburra (Lane Cove River), at Moco Boula (Hunters Hill peninsula), in the east, to Burramatta (Parramatta) towards the head of the river to the west.

Dharug Elder, Uncle Chris Tobin, shares with us that the Ryde area is known as the place where the Koradgi (clever men) would meet and they were believed to have special abilities, including the ability to visit the Sky Country—the residence of the Ancestors and home of the sky father, Biami.

The Wallumattagal thrived for countless generations, until the arrival of the British and the subsequent establishment of modern Australia. It is understood that no Wallumattagal survived the invasion, which was carried out through coordinated military planning and operations.

‼️ Serious damage has occurred to the Field of Mars Reserve’s award-winning bushcare site and fire trail, as well as to Tyrrell Park. I’ve reported this issue to Council and will be following up, not only for answers, but to get this fixed. The Field of Mars is an incredibly precious natural space in the City of Ryde and it needs to be looked after, not mistreated in such a reckless way. DM me if you know more to the story.

Team Gary and Jordan campaigning today in West Ryde and Meadowbank.

Unlike major political parties we are self funded, and have limited resources. But that has spurred us to be more creative. We use discarded furniture parts for our campaign posters, and have hand printed our campaign t-shirts. 😀

Meet us on the campaign trail, or write to us about any community issues or concerns we can help with.

🌳🚶‍♂️🚶🚶‍♀️🌳 We're so lucky to have these green spaces in our own backyard!

I've spent countless hours in the Field of Mars Reserve over the years but can still learn something new about its rich history.

Yesterday the Ryde Hunters Hill Flora and Fauna Preservation Society (RHHFFPS) and the Ryde District Historical Society (RDHS) had a BBQ lunch and heritage walk at the Field of Mars Reserve.

Thanks to Philip Ward for leading us on the walk and sharing your intimate knowledge of one of the City of Ryde's best natural treasures!
