Australian Bureau of Statistics 2022 reported:

Veterinary Wellness is part of a joint initiative between the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) & SuperFriend, as there is growing evidence from academic research, industry bodies and professionals that the veterinary profession is in a mental health crisis - over the last three decades the risk of su***de in veterinary professionals has been reported to have steadily increased.

The primary focus of this new edition Interactive Guide is the AVA THRIVE Wellness Initiative - an industry-led initiative that aims to support veterinarians and veterinary staff to lead satisfying, prosperous, and healthy careers.

THRIVE programs aim to safeguard and improve the mental health of the veterinary team which outlines the importance of taking action to moderate work demands linked to occupational stress, interventions and resources to improve wellbeing targeted at the individual, group and leadership level. Safe Work Australia has reported 15-25 year-olds have a 75% greater chance of being injured at work, with apprentice deaths and serious injuries peaking between 7-10am.

Approximately 15% of the Australian workforce comprises workers 15-24 years, and over 14,000 serious workers’ compensation claims are made by workers in this age group. One of the contributing factors to injuries is young and inexperienced workers being unable to recognise and cope with potential hazards.

As an employer, you must ensure the work environment and the way workers carry out their work is safe, regardless of the type and terms of their employment. This includes protecting workers from both physical and psychological workplace hazards, ensuring they are supervised at all times and working safely, with the correct use of PPE, participating in Toolbox Talks and sign-off on Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS).

Findings suggest the prevalence of poor mental health in the mining industry is high. There are a number of mental health problems unique to the industry whose cause is directly influenced by:
- the hazardous environment;
- shift work schedules; interpersonal relationships;
- psychosocial risks - high job demands and stress;
- wellbeing - quality of life and job satisfaction; substance abuse;
- a perceived culture of incivility;
- higher aggression, bullying or harassment and sexual violence behaviours.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) and the Australian National University in 2022 estimated there are 4.67 million cases of food borne illnesses in Australia each year that resulted in 47,900 hospitalisations and 38 deaths.

If you own or manage a food business a new, stricter Food Safety Standard will come into effect 8 December 2023 - Standard 3.2.2A Food Safety Management Tools - a risk-based, preventative approach to providing safe and suitable food by implementing food hygiene controls at each stage of food handling, and implementation of risk management tools.

Restaurants and cafés must implement all three Tools to strengthen their management of hazards known to contribute to foodborne illness. The Tools are:

The updated Australian Dangerous Goods (ADG) Code Edition 7.8 is now in effect and will be mandatory from 1 April 2024. It brings domestic regulations for the transport of dangerous goods by road closer in line with international provisions with a focus on improving safety outcomes.

Everyone involved with transporting dangerous goods is responsible for understanding their requirements to ensure safe handling and transportation. Dangerous goods are classified according to their effects such as fire, pollution, corrosion, oxidation, spontaneous combustion or poisoning, which may result in bodily injury, property damage or environmental impairment or damage, or a combination of these.

Today we recognise and support World Day for Safety and Health at Work (World Day) and Workers' Memorial Day. Safe Work Australia 2021 data shows 169 workers were fatally injured at work in Australia. World Day is a time to reflect on the importance of work health and safety in your workplace to help prevent fatalities and injuries.
