🍄 👁

Mushrooms and fungi have long held a place in our minds that is both mystical and magical, whether that’s through their role in psychedelic culture, or fairy tales and folklore. They are however the most integral in nature as they play their part turning death into new life, and sending signals across the mycelium network that enable plants to communicate with each other, and to transfer and share resources.

In January 2022 at Mona Foma in Hobart, a small group of intrepid mycologists came together to embark on a bio-intelligence research assignment, forming MTS (Mycelium Translation Systems), in which we cultivated a mushroom colony to perform a continuous musical and visual display.

Bio-sensors were used to capture electrical impulses from the fungi and the neural network of the mycelium that connects them. The bio-feedback data was translated live into a generative stream of music and visuals by a similar artificial network made up of an array of recycled electronics. And the audience witnessed the fungi cross over into the digital realm - as the two worlds became one.

The experience allowed visitors to glimpse further into the language of nature, as they were invited to wear polarised sunglasses and visors in order to see the visuals that were playing on seemingly blank bright white LCD screens - gently encouraging us to look beyond the surface.

Out Of Reach. One of a series of artworks inspired by Issue One of Gluesociety Magazine for a recent exhibition. Leaves you with a sense of unfulfilment and rubbery fingers.

07/12/2021

In January we are heading to Tasmania where in collaboration with x we’ll be cultivating a sacred mushroom colony that will perform a generative sound and visual display.

Sensors that capture bio-feedback data will allow the fungi and their mycelium network to seemingly crossover into the digital realm - decomposing the tech as we translate and broadcast their stream of consciousness through an array of screens, polarised lenses, and a quadraphonic sound system.

The Mush Room - a geodesic dome filled will light, sound, and fungi will be live in Hobart at The Goods Shed, 28 to 30 Jan.

Let the spores take over! 🍄 👁 😎

GLUES©IETY magazine holds a mirror up to the time it was made. Somehow the further we get away from the jolt that was 2020 and reflect on the production of Issue One, the more pertinent the imagery within it becomes. The paradox of living out our isolation publicly on our socials seems fairly perverse. But then maybe we like having it all on show. Maybe we just have fear of missing out.

6. New Works By Dead Artists.

For Issue One of GLUES©IETY magazine we commissioned some of the world’s most significant artists to materialise some new work – from the spirit world. Our enlisted team of mediums were guided through artistic transcendence as they put gauche to paper. We imagine the delegation would have been second nature for the Andy 'The Factory’ Warhol, but not sure how much Frida Carlo (pictured) or Degas would have enjoyed the process. Like eating soup with a bread knife.

8. Nice Work If You Can Get It.

If this story for issue one was a song it would sound like the bastard child of The Only Way Is Up (Yazz) and When I’m Cleaning Windows (George Formby).

If any of you disc jockeys want to mash that up for us, we’ll post it on our story and dance in our underpants.

Issue One: 9. Life Writing

A picture paints a thousand words but is the reverse true? For Issue One of the GLUES©IETY magazine, we invited nine writers to observe the male and female n**e in words.

Amongst the congregation were poets, philosophers, commercial writers, broadcasters and those more accustomed to visual expression: photographers, stylists and artists.

The response was as inspiring and diverse as the talent – from unabridged streams of consciousness to beautifully crafted verse and references ranging from Blake’s Devine Comedy to Roy Walker’s Catchphrase! The experience was described as anything from ‘moving' to ‘terrifying’.

In contrast, It was all familiar territory for our fantastic models ( ) who commanded the stage with great poise and the odd gravity-defying feat of endurance.

Thanks all for your excellent contributions: .pilbrow

Here’s a process shot of the brilliant capturing ’4. The Time Of Our Lives' for the first issue.

The shots were taken with Derek's Toyo View Field Camera on Kodak Portra 160 ASA colour negative.

The whole story can be seen in GLUES©IETY magazine Issue One, available at our shop (bio link).

Issue One: 4. The Time of Our Lives

It took 69 days to take this Holden Commodore Executive (VX 4d Sedan 3.8L) from crusher to photo studio with lots of labourious sanding and spraying in-between.

The process of repeatedly rubbing countless number of folds and crevices (some only big enough for a little finger) became a shamanistic blend of pain and meditation. And so the meaning of the work came out of the process of making it: a comforting celebration of the pointlessness of human endeavour.

The car is available to buy at gluesociety.com/shop (bio link) but, if you don’t have room in your lounge room, Issue One of GLUES©IETY Magazine features the full story so you can appreciate it from all angles regardless.

Behold! The launch issue of our brand new biannual magazine, ‘GLUES©CIETY’ hits the shelves today.

Each issue features artworks, all created by The Glue Society collective. Eighteen new ideas feature across the 264 pages of Issue One exploring themes from the global pandemic and its effect on us as individuals and as a society as well as perspectives on America, faith, purpose and connection.

Unlike any other publication, GLUES©CIETY aims to be a work of art in and of itself. Rather than selling double-page spreads to advertisers, you, the reader can purchase some of the art for yourself – whether the physical sculptures, or prints of the artwork included from each issue, by visiting The Glue Society online store (bio link).

Get you copy of GLUES©CIETY Issue One at the online store or at a reputable magazine/bookstore today. There are three different covers to collect.

Stockists in: UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan & Canada.
