Queensland's Crisafulli government is embroiled in a new "jobs for mates" controversy after it appointed a Liberal National Party powerbroker to oversee the state's lead agency for disaster recovery.

The recent announcement of LNP stalwart Jane McNamara as chair of the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) is even more controversial due to her links to a disgraced council CEO with corrupt conduct findings against him.

At least 34 taxpayer-funded executive jobs and board positions have been handed to LNP donors, former politicians, candidates, colleagues and party operatives since the party came to power less than a year ago, in a process the opposition has labelled as "frankly outrageous".

A major study of the teeth of thousands of schoolchildren across Queensland has found rates of tooth decay have decreased since water fluoridation was introduced.

Two Queensland councils voted to scrap fluoride in the past 12 months, although the majority of the state's population does have access to it in drinking water.

The Queensland government has introduced sweeping reforms to its defamation laws which would bring it in line with other jurisdictions.

A law expert says the proposed reforms would offer better protections for social media platforms from being sued, while giving courts greater powers to have content taken down.

The bill has been referred to a parliamentary committee.

The Queensland government last week unveiled its energy road map, which included a new solar panel rebate targeting landlords.

It follows the introduction of a federal battery subsidy scheme in July, which contributed to rising demand for solar across the country.

Despite the demand, clean energy advocates are urging governments to do more to boost access to solar for renters and apartment-dwellers.

with chief business correspondent Ian Verrender: Back in January 2011, Santos' then-chief executive David Knox announced that the company would lead a consortium to build a massive LNG export facility on Curtis Island, just the off the Queensland coast near Gladstone.

There was just one problem. A large portion of the gas reserves it thought would be sufficient to feed this export monster proved to be too difficult to tap.

The solution? Siphon gas from the domestic market.

The end result has been that domestic gas prices on Australia's east coast have trebled, resulting in surging electricity prices that have put Australian households and energy intensive businesses under extreme pressure.

It was a primary force behind Australia’s inflationary surge, it’s forced businesses either to the wall or to shift offshore, undermined national industry policy and resulted in the loss of countless thousands of jobs. And it all hinged on one disastrous decision in an Adelaide boardroom.
