1920/1994 Matt Cahill is an Australian singer/songwriter & composer.
As a graduate of the Ryzard Pusz School of Percussion he has been actively involved with bands since the early eighties, although most notably in his 13 year tenure as 'Vocalist/Guitarist' with the multi award winning Australian band 'The Violets'. Disillusioned with the traditional 'band' format, he eventually formed EVOLETAH, not so much as a band but as a 'musical project' to record songs writt
en for The Violets that had never been recorded. Having 'Cherry Picked' members, this resulted in the projects initial offering 'Fool's Errand'. Since then, he has handpicked collaborators to make albums with in not a dissimilar way to that of Jason Swinscoe, producer of 'The Cinematic Orchestra'.
Among other projects, avant-electro duo 'The Quiet Room' & pop outfit 'Late Night Trade' Cahill is also the creative director of the 'Paper Rock Scissors' record label. Having been recording & playing live with 'EVOLETAH' since 2005, the collaborative project recently enjoyed global recognition with the critically acclaimed fourth album, 'We ache for the Moon' & was then followed up in 2021 with fifth studio album, 'Run with the Hunted'. Currently, Cahill has resumed his position in the band as the former lead vocalist of The Violets, as all original members reunited for the first time in 20 years. Having spent a very productive few weeks in the studio, the band is now embarking on the release of their brand new album,
'Smoke, Mirrors & other half-truths' due for release in March 2022.

Couldn’t agree more!!!!
It would seem that international touring isn’t valued enough to receive grant support from the MDO… 🙄the “gate keepers” of SA music, putting hard working artists into more debt. Tax payers dollars for “other” artists to receive 8k grants to make promotional videos for their record. I repeat, promotional videos, NOT music videos. So rather than supporting artists that are reaching far and wide and giving it an actual slog. Tax payers cash is supporting ads… nice one.
My question is, what is the point in having these people representing South Aus music if they will only support a select few i.e. their mates? And why aren’t they supporting a wider range of artists that are pushing boundaries?
Some time back we were actually emailed by a “rep” (not naming names) pushing us to apply for a grant, telling us we were a shoo-in to receive it. We applied and no surprises we didn’t get it. But guess who did? The person (rep) telling us to apply for the damn thing! So yeah, enough of this crap.
Long story short, we will now have to set up a gofundme to get our sorry arses over to EU for a massive tour, plus take out personal loans because the lack of support from our local SA music representatives. To be clear, we weren’t expecting our tour to be completely covered by grant money, we were actually fronting more than half of the tour ourselves… but hell! Surely these small city reps will support a local band that have been invited on a huge European tour right!? Yeah na… but here’s cash to another band making an ad.
Maybe stop wasting tax payers cash on silly SA music awards where people are pressed by reps to vote for themselves.. And maybe just get out and watch a gig? Hey just an idea...
Worst part is, so many SA bands have said this to me, but alas they are just too afraid to say it. Well as the great Mr Dylan once said “times are changin’”… MusicSA and MDO have NOT supported us ONCE in the years we have been together. Every single thing we have done as a band has been self funded.
We will make this tour work, with or without support from the keepers,
