"Clearly, your mood can vary depending on your surroundings. Generally writers like a fairly quiet space to work where they won’t be too distracted. If you work best in a clean, organized, uncluttered environment, make sure your workspace reflects that."

Where do you like to write? Where do you feel the most comfortable, and the least distracted? Do you like it dark and womb-like, or open and bright? Do you decorate your office with family photos or movie posters? Where do you do your best work? Clearly,...

As a professional writer, I also use and recommend a number of practical and effective writing techniques to ensure that the writing flows, even if I am not feeling particularly inspired and enthusiastic about the task ahead. 😊

The FAST process is a powerful tool for breaking through the barriers of resistance and avoidance when you don’t feel like writing and need to get yourself into action. This involves sitting down to write for a set, measurable period of time, usually an hour at least. To use this tool, get yourself prepared to write, open your laptop and document file at a fresh clean form, select your intended topic, set a timer for 1 hour and get writing. The only rule here being that you must continue writing for the full hour without interruption or a break, if at all possible. Once you get started you will find that the time seems to just slip by and before you know it, you will have been writing for the hour. In fact, you may well choose to continue writing for another few hours or if not, at least by this point, you will have written for a solid hour. After all, it is doing the writing that will get your book written in the end… so try the FAST technique today!

Even though writing a book is a relatively solitary process for the writer, for those who share their lives with you, it requires a team effort. Therefore, let everyone in your work, family and social circles know that you are focused upon writing and completing your book for a concerted and specific period of time. Ask them all to support you in completing the task by not only providing positive reinforcement and encouragement, but also by giving you the uninterrupted space and time you need to get the job done.
This means that it’s important to let family members know that you are working on a project which is very important to you and that you need time by yourself in peace and quiet to complete the project.

Consequently, you may not be available for the usual and expected family tasks or events. Tell your friends that you won’t be socialising as much as usual for the next x number of weeks. Also inform work colleagues and team mates that you will be putting all of your spare hours into writing your book, so you will be unavailable for additional work, overtime or extra professional functions etc. Remember to highlight that once your book is done that you will make it up to them and be available for all of your usual family, social and work related responsibilities, celebrations and fun events too!

Taking control of your time, space and writing FLOW will help you to reduce, or ideally remove, any unwanted interruptions and distractions to your precious writing time. To do this you must be strict with yourself and exercise discipline in the following areas:
✅ Do not answer the phone during your scheduled writing times,
✅ Do not respond to text messages,
✅ Do not check your email inbox or social media accounts, and
✅ Do not allow any unwanted interruptions or time wasters such as, friends, family and business associates visiting, dropping by or asking for a few minutes of your time.

You may wish to consider creating a Do Not Disturb sign for your door and even create a do not disturb hand signal for anyone who shares the space with you. The benefit being that you can immediately stop the intruder in their tracks without offending them, continue with your train of thought, get down your ideas and then respond when you are ready. I know this may sound a little extreme, however, if you are on a roll or in the FLOW with your writing, the last thing you want to have happen is to be disturbed mid-sentence. I have used this successfully when writing from my home office and also whilst on group writing retreats.
