Good news 🐴
We’re excited to share the latest on the Western Australian Horse Trail Management Guidelines! These guidelines provide a consistent approach to developing sustainable horse trails across WA, with the vision of creating high-quality trails that support the community and protect our natural, cultural, and heritage values.
Developed in partnership with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC), these guidelines are meant to assist land managers, trail builders, and users with best practices for trail planning, design, and maintenance.
Objectives of the Guidelines:
Recognize the different styles and needs of horse riders and visitors.
Support sustainable planning and design principles.
Standardize trail classifications, development, and management across WA.
Promote the consistent use of the Trail Development Process.
Chapters Include:
Understanding Horse Riding

Building on previous efforts like the WA Recreational Horse Trail Strategy 2015 and Trails Development Series 2019, these guidelines are anticipated to play a key role in supporting sustainable, safe, and enjoyable trails for everyone.
Next Steps: The WA Horse Trail Management Guidelines are in the final stages and will be distributed for stakeholder consultation (including the WA Horse Council) later this year, with endorsement and release expected in early 2025.
For more information, feel free to reach out to Alison Pritchard, Coordinator, Recreation & Trails Unit. Let’s work together to ensure WA’s horse trails are a legacy for the right users, in the right places, and for the right reasons.
Janet Cameron and Dianne Bennit AM have worked tirelessly for many years on the tracks and trails portfolio for the WA Horse Council and we look forward to the completion of the Guidelines!
