Gningala Yarran-Mark is a qualified lawyer with a Master of Business Leadership and Bachelor of Science in Indigenous Australian Research Methodologies. She has a successful career holding management positions in Western Australian resources companies. She's currently undertaking a PhD here at Edith Cowan University.

Today, Chelsea Boothman spoke to Gningala about the broader impact of the AFL's Sir Doug Nicholls round. Gningala said she'd like to see indigenous Australians recognised more broadly -not only the elite athletes. Indigenous academics, doctors, actors - across all sectors.

It was a thoughtful and interesting conversation.

Laki Baker has worked as a producer on some of Australia's biggest programmes including Masterchef, Farmer Wants a Wife, Getaway and even Telethon. She's now a producer on the upcoming, Maggie Beer's Big Mission. It's an experiment, looking to improve the quality of food - and the quality of life -of people in Australia's aged-care sector. Today, she joined Sally Marshall on Radio ECU to speak about the project - and about working in the tv production business.

A graduate of our programme and a 6PR/George Grljusich Internship winner, Ben is now the Broadcasting Operations Manager at the AFL.
In his "spare" time, he's also a steak sandwich aficionado.

Ciara Hain is a terrific young woman who’s done interesting things since graduating from our programme. She’s just created this podcast, called “History’s First Draft” for SBS News. Have a listen, it’s very good.

Listen to SBS News In Depth on Spotify. Hear the story behind the headlines. In under ten minutes each episode, we’ll help you make sense of the news stories that matter to you from Australia and the world, with reports and interviews from the SBS News team.

You’ve heard of “fake it till you make it?”.

Well, have a look at this advertisement for the WAFL State game.

Our Monday WAFL team took the roles of reporters and security.

We’re just putting this here so we have a record when they’re real-life reporters (and security??)
Fair bump, play on, gang.

WORK PLACEMENT FEEDBACK FROM CHELSEA BOOTHMAN - NOVA

“It was amazing to spend a week at Nova 93.7, although I work on their street team it was really insightful to learn more about the station. I spent the week with the Breakfast team, Nathan, Nat and Shaun plus everyone else involved in creating Nova's breaky program! I learnt so much, including how they source stories, create content for certain segments and how they gather interviewees. I spent a day with Ellie watching & learning how she sources & writes news bulletins. I love how the whole team works together to bring Perth the best breakfast radio program.

I also did a day with Ross who is the work day announcer and I really enjoyed my time learning from him. Ross gave me some really insightful advice which was “When you're looking at what job you want to get into, look for a deeper meaning and what makes you happiest”.

The week taught me a lot and I can’t wait to use the knowledge I learnt while on the placement during my time completing the Graduate Diploma of Broadcasting.”

And THIS is how you do a live cross!

Doyenne of our programme, former Course Coordinator Jo McManus was stuck in a monster queue at Heathrow Airport.

Nek minit she’s "live" on the BBC.

And her son, (and ECU Postgraduate Broadcasting graduate ) Sam McManus tells us she got a round of applause from his newsroom.

Well played McManus x 2 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

WORK PLACEMENT - RACHEL BOOTHMAN AT TRIPLE M
Pictured with Andrew "Embers" Embley and Katie Lamb, from "The Rush Hour" .

Rachel writes:
"My time at 92.9 Triple M was nothing short of amazing!
I spent my week doing a variety of things such as: working alongside producers, overseeing content/ pre and post show meetings, overseeing/ sitting in on both the Breakfast Show and Drive shows. I was shown how to use the (radio scheduling) program Zeta by Breakfast and Drive show anchors/panel operators, sat in with workday announcers and was shown how they run their mid-day shows.

Plus, I spent a day with Brand Experience running through the different roles behind the scene at Triple M. I also got to write news stories and oversee journalists at Southen Cross Austereo.

Extremely grateful to the team at Triple M and the opportunity given to me through ECU’s Graduate Diploma of Broadcasting."

Work placement is an excellent way to put theory into practice.
Sally Marshall spent a week in Broome at ABC Kimberley - watch below.

What did she learn? This:

"The past week at the ABC Kimberley was a truly insightful experience, as I learnt and witnessed the inner workings of a regional newsroom.

I was fortunate enough to be there during a busy week of news. A 21-year-old man went missing in salty, boggy land north of Broome, and the infamous cable tie guy pleaded not guilty.

The biggest takeaway- and perhaps the most interesting thing to witness- was the dynamic of the team. The journos at ABC Broome are ready to adapt to all mediums including tv, radio and online. Many of the stories we covered this week went into the state wide bulletin, and even the content we shot was pulled across for other networks to use.

In my one week of work experience, I got to do things to actually contribute to news and programming. I conducted interviews, attending court, wrote radio news, constructed a piece for Country Hour and went live to air to wrap up the week of news in the Kimberley! "

The relationship between police and media is mutually beneficial - if occasionally complicated by competing priorities.
Inspector Geoff DeSanges ,Manager of the WA Police Media unit is a great friend of our programme. Every year the students go into Police Headquarters and Geoff gives us an in-depth briefing on the roles and responsibilities of his team, and how we can work together. This year, he was also the interview "talent" for a mock-press conference, where our students tested their new interviewing skills.

Several of our recent graduates have been snapped up by Police Media, working in varying roles. Photo 2 is Inspector DeSanges with Julian Vicentini. Fresh from a stint working as a reporter for 7NEWS Regional WA, Julian will now be taking the calls from journos, for the WA Police. Other graduates are working in content creation for the agency, even accompanying officers on raids and filming high-profile arrests.

Edith Cowan University Invites Applications for the $10,000 Russell Woolf Memorial Scholarship

Edith Cowan University (ECU) has proudly announced the opening of applications for the Russell Woolf Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship, valued at $10,000, is tailored for individuals from Indigenous or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds, as well as those from marginalised groups, admitted to the highly acclaimed Graduate Diploma of Broadcasting.

The scholarship, in honour of the late Russell Woolf, seeks to amplify diverse voices within the media industry. Russell Woolf, celebrated for his illustrious career in media, notably at the Australia Broadcasting Corporation, left an indelible mark on the industry.

“Russell cared deeply about encouraging diverse voices, especially from First Nations’ backgrounds. His family and I are thrilled to offer someone else the opportunity to enter the industry he loved,” Russell’s wife Kylie Ashenbrenner said.

"Russell completed a previous version of our programme when he was a mature aged student,” Course Coordinator Andrea Burns said.

“Each year he would come back and speak to the students. Russell always emphasised the privilege of being a broadcaster," she recalled.

"The Russell Woolf Memorial Scholarship embodies our commitment to fostering diversity in the media landscape," remarked Burns. “Current world events reinforce the need for a strong media. We’re looking for applicants who share our dedication to amplifying diverse narratives."

Prospective applicants for the Russell Woolf Memorial Scholarship can apply here: https://www.ecu.edu.au/scholarships/details/the-russell-woolf-broadcasting-scholarship
