Yeah The Boys ✅
Sir Doug Nicholls Round 10
A round to celebrate the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Australian Football and the country, and boy the Walyalup Football Club do it well!

After recently finding some form the stage was set to take on the reigning premiers on our home ground in Boorloo (Perth), on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja.

After trailing by 2 points at quarter time, Walyalup came out and continued their pressure, eventually taking the lead in the 2nd and never lost it from there.

Another great performance from our mids who were mopping up everything Big Swaggy was giving them. Ending the game with 43 hit-outs and 47 clearances.

Brayshaw lead the way with 33 disposals and a goal, while our forwards got to work with Walters and Amiss both kicking 3. A total of 11 goal scorers helped Walyalup run away 29 point victors.

Going into our last 3 games before the bye no one expected us to win any of them. With one game left we have beaten both Sydney and Geelong, with another powerhouse to come this week when we take on Naarm. Can we take another huge scalp to head into the bye and set our season up?

Get up, it’s game day ⚓️

OnlyFreo would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land, on which we play this great game of ours and pay our respects to Elders from long ago and from today.

As a proud Noongar man I am continually blown away by the love and work that our club, the mighty Walyalup Dockers, do to support, share and promote our culture. Having been able to work with them and see the passion firsthand is truly remarkable.

Our clubs history is filled with famous Aboriginal names from both AFL and AFLW teams that not only represent their families but the wider mob. From Abraham to Kickett, Farmer to Headland, Cook to Hill, Johnson to Walters, Henry to Pearce (x2). From Bentley to Haynes and Houghton to Morrison just to name a few. Talent upon talent!

This game of ours can really bring us all together, no matter your heritage. Sharing, learning and understanding culture can be really amazing, especially if it’s to do with the place we call home.

This Sir Doug Nicholls Round, let’s celebrate and continue to walk together 🤝🏽

🛑WOTW: FFC
This week’s ‘Weak of the Week’ goes to...the whole club 😭

This season is off to a rocky start after dropping games to St Kilda and North Melbourne. The boys are hurting, the club is hurting, the members and fans are hurting.

The North Melbourne game stings a little more as we never had the game on our terms, didn’t look like we were playing our brand of footy (again) and only ended up losing by a point. Our skills, connection and forward pressure are down and it’s proving very costly so far.

I’m not going to get into the final play, deliberate call scenario, as we should have not been in the position to sn**ch the game. We have a lot of work to do.

West Coast looked dangerous on the weekend and although I have faith that the boys will turn the season around at some point, I’m not sure it will be this weekend.

I hope they prove me wrong 🙏🏽

🔸FOTW: Michael Walters
This week’s ‘Freak of the Week’ goes to the electrifying small forward, Michael ‘Sonny’ Walters.

As the round 2 tactical sub, Walters checked into the game for Matt Taberner. With 37% ToG, Walters hit the scoreboard 3 times for a return of 2.1 (7). This included a launching mark, before a set shot from the boundary, within minutes of being in the game.

Walters pressure and attack on the ball was something we were lacking, and his presence was felt from the minute he was subbed in.

Having that sort of impact on our game in the short about of time, Walters is clearly deserving of a spot in the 22. His wisdom, leadership and skills will be critical in taking
this young, developing team into the future.

The 32 year old is currently in the last year of his contract, but personally I think he has another couple in him, provided he can stay fit.

Nah The Boys ❌
The disappointing start to the season continued with the Young Buck and his new team having the last laugh in his return to Optus Stadium.

North Melbourne had the game on their terms all afternoon, before an eight minute burst at the end of the 4th that saw Freo cut the margin to a point. The last two minutes was an intense one, for everyone watching, as Freo just fell short of a comeback win in a controversial ending.

I guess the silver lining is we only lost by a point, when we played so poor, and we know we can play a lot better than we have been. Albeit the loss was to the 2022 wooden spooners, but clearly Clarkson has had a massive impact at his new club.
We still have a lot of work to do…

Across town, West Coast looked really good against GWS. Playing a new brand of footy, their well structured forward line was really damaging. Personally I’m not looking forward to Sunday’s home Derby.

If we lose this week, what happens next?

Footy Returns to Optus!
Saturday afternoon Fremantle host North Melbourne in their Round 2 clash.

Can we bounce back after a very dockery (shout out ) display last week?
Will the mids get to work?
Do we swing the axe to fix our forward line issues?
Are you gonna ‘Boo’ Young Buck?

Who takes the win and by what margin?

Nah The Boys ❌

Very disappointing start to the season with Fremantle never looking like they were up for the fight.

To Saints credit they knew exactly how we would play and were able to shut us down.
Now the rest of the comp knows too…

We were out played, out coached and we drastically need to improve before Saturday.

What changes do you want to see?

Purple Enemy No.1
🟣Ross the Boss.🟣

Ross Lyon was adamant he did not stab Mark Harvey in the back when he took the reins as Fremantle’s Head Coach after his shock departure from St Kilda.

The footy world was stunned in September 2011 when Lyon advised St Kilda he would be leaving. Using an escape clause, Lyon was able to walk out on his final year of his contract. While this was taking place, on the other side of the country, Harvey had been advised of his contract termination with a year left to run.

Ironically, the day Ross the Boss landed in Perth was the same day Harvey and his family were leaving. Harvey taking off at 8:00am while Lyon touched down at 8:30am.

During his time at Fremantle, Ross the Boss was the first Coach to take Freo to our first Grand Final appearance, in 2013, and held the title of winning the most games as Fremantle Head Coach.

In a strange turn of events, after failing to take Freo to the Finals in four consecutive seasons, it would be Lyon that got the sack despite being contracted for another year. A lot of mixed emotions was seen from players, staff, supporters and the footy world when this news broke, with some LOL’s (Laughing out loud) and some supporting the exiting coach.

With Ross the Boss back at the Saints, preparing to coach his first official game of the season that happens to be against Freo, something tells me will be personal…

That’s why he is the Purple Enemy No.1 🟣
